Beowulf's story...
A bit oddly done, wasn't it?

The 'false hero' idea was decent enough, but throughout the story, I kept getting a feeling that the battles were too forced (painwheel, for example), or the wrong ones (where are Eliza and Peacock?).
That, and the fact that Wulf is basically a secondary character to one of the developers' waifu - Annie.

Yea, I was really disappointed, especially by that:
"That, and the fact that Wulf is basically a secondary character to one of the developers' waifu - Annie."
That should be a BEOWULF's story, not Annie's, she helped him nearly every time.

I held out hope that Alex could do better, but I didn't expect it given that Beowulf is little more than a pile of pro wrestling memes and references to the warrior poem of the same name. I figured we'd end up with a Bruckheimer plot. Lo and behold, I was right. :headstone:

See, Beowulf isn't part of the main story. He isn't prominent in Skullgirls lore, he's just a wrestler. I quite loved his story mode, it's more about him coming to terms with the fact his fight with Grendel was fixed, less about him kicking ass. He was a tool his whole life, and through sheer willpower he overcame all that and came to his true strenght. He isn't a main character, like Painwheel, Valentine, or Peacock. If Annie was in the game, she wouldn't be a main character either but she would be more important than Beowulf since Annie has been fighting Skullgirls since the begining.

Why is the Painwheel battle forced? She's an anti-Skullgirl project. As it's Double manipulating Beowulf, it makes sense that she sends him to take care of it under a false pretext.

While this is true, the same could be said about Fortune and Bella, both of whom aren't really directly involved with the Skull heart problem.
I'm not saying his story is bad; on the contrary, the characterization beats the original cast by far, but I'm upset with the fact that the closing fights were such a let down...
Compare Wulf's last fight to squigly's, for example. The difference is there.

Yeah, but it's basically running into her on the street. And afterwards, it's just her screaming and running away, followed by a skip to the next scene.

She was beaten and weakened from the fight, though, sett up as easy prey. As we later see Double consumed her, I reckon this works better for he than having someone outright kill Painwheel.

I'm not saying Double's plan was flawed, I'm just saying the story's way of portraying that plan could've been better, in my opinion. :)

I agree got too much of a secondary role in his own story, and doesnt realy add up with the rest of the stories because I believe everyone survives, beside Double and Marie.

Annie has relevance to the story, similarly to Eliza. Beowulf is a square peg, he just doesn't fit. His slot was wasted and it could have been given to Annie, Marie, Dahlia, Umbrella, Scythana, Feng, Beatrix...pick just about anyone and they'd have been a better fit to the game.

One interesting question that evolves from this. Since no story mode is considered canon, does Skullgirls even have a canon?

Yes it does.
However, unless Lab Zero's sales go up somehow, or they give in and have another fundraiser, odds are we'll never see it, as it requires 3 or 4 additional characters.

If the canon isn't released then it doesn't exist, AFAIC. I can't exactly play Skullgirls on Alex's brain. :headstone:

That doesn't make any sense. How would this, in any way, be my fault?
