Characters speaking Japanese
They start speaking japanese in training mode? Is this intended?

Well there aren't any language settings for the characters, the only thing I can think of is the Anime Peacock voicepack. Were you playing against Peacock?

Certain characters have alternate voice packs that can be activated by either pressing up or down in a character's palette selection screen (acessed by selecting a character with start), or just holding down whichever buttons you use to select them. If done properly, the character's name will change to a darker color. The characters with voice packs are Peacock, Parasoul, Big Band, Double and Painwheel.
