Controls and How to Combo Properly
So I haven't been playing this game long, maybe 3 hours or so, and I've finished the stories of Filia, Parasoul and Painwheel, and I'm really struggling with the controls. I've tried with an Xbone pad and a Dualshock 4 for the better D-pads, but the control menu only shows highkick/lowpunch etc etc. rather than actual button bindings. I would, short of searching online, have to go into training and match up the keyboard bindings with the controller actions. I shouldn't need to do this really.

Anyway, another thing I noticed is that, since I was effectively 'learning by doing' as far as the combo's go I was really struggling to get practically any chained-together ability to proc at all that I had already done. The combo menu shows a stick rotation instead of, say, left - down. I'm struggling more with the D-pad. I've been getting by well enough so far mashing basic attacks and dodging back but I want to knock out some 'wombo combo's' and if there's an opening I just flail. What exactly am I doing wrong that makes simple looking stuff just not work when I want it to?

I'm not blaming the game, would genuinely love some advice on personal improvement. :')

While I'm not sure what your problem is with the controls from your main post, you can change the controls in options. I believe the layout is light to medium attacks as the face buttons, and heavy attacks on the shoulders/bumpers. That's what most fighting game use, anyways.

Now, I'd recommend you find some basic combos for your characters online.
Basically, moves link into other moves of a stronger type, but moves that are done by doing an input, like the little down - forward moves, cannot be linked into moves of any type except for meter options. You might be trying to link together something that technically can't link together, as you mentioned you're learning your own combos.

Another thing that might be keeping you from properly doing the inputs is the way they're performed.
While it might seem like you need to do a simple down - right input, you actually need to be getting in the diagonal input, or down - down right - right.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I found a few chains I could use and I seem to be able to pull them off reasonably consistently after a few hours practice. Using the analog stick isn't so bad (but this game is screaming out for a decent fight stick from me!).

Also I think you were right, the need for a diagonal input was really screwing me up. I don't think using an Xbone contoller is helping too much since the sticks are suuuuper loose on this pad.

Anyway I had a look at your guides since you had so much time logged and they helped too, so thanks for the post and making such useful content.

It's so weird for people to reference my guides, I really appreciate that.
Anyways, you're welcome!
