until i see an actual new game from the new people in charge of the IP (hidden variable studios + future club?), i'm not even sure they have enough inspiration and talent to make a good game
Skullgirls was always a niche fighter and always will be, so as long as the game continues to maintain its current pace there won't be much of a reason to make a new one for the foreseeable future.
More than likely they'll just keep releasing additional content for this game until they decide they want to expand out in a way that requires a different foundation at which point they'll start working on a sequel, probably won't be for a while though.
I'd honestly prefer SG2, not even necessarily as that different a game (back in the day they said if SG2 happened it would be mostly the same foundation but with a lower undizzy cap and no LLMMH ground strings), but moreso for marketing purposes. It's getting harder and harder to attract new blood into an 11+ year old game. Just by calling SG2 a sequel I think it'd have a big impact to get people to come check it out again. And I have a few ideas of what I'd add and revise if I were in charge, there's definitely some stuff they could do to still make it feel like a proper sequel.
But hey, I'm happy we're getting any new content at all. A few years back I thought the 2E+ patch was likely going to be the end based on Autumn being broke and a strained relationship with Lab Zero, but then Annie happened and then a full season happened. Who knows, maybe I'll get surprised yet again.
Not only it is a very old game and financial situation bad. The competition is way better. You get way more sexy games like Street fighters, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat... just to name a few, which doesn't let themselves dictate to cut away the sexy things and even have a big fanbase with mods. I am also happy that there are other policies and ideas of artist freedom in east asian countries, so a government or some lonely feminists cannot just come and say "you now have to censor your game, or we boycott you". Means some competitors are more free to their games.
That's not to say there aren't some areas a potential SG2 can't catch up in too though. Them's Fightin' Herds is the gold standard to look up to since it built on SG's foundation, and I'd love to see as much of its QoL backported to SG2 as possible. Part of the reason I want a sequel is to add everything TFH has.
