But you gotta start somewhere.
The sooner the better.
In real life, slamming your head against a wall until the wall cracks will lead to permanent brain damage and possibly internal bleeding, if not death. But in Skullgirls, you'll learn from your mistakes.
Playing against super high-level players isn't optimal for a newbie. Sure, you might get a glance at a few advanced strategies, but you'll just get your ass handed to you for most of the match. You'll have to learn essential concepts, namely resets, very quickly, and experienced players can trick you up with another reset by the time you figure out the first. Or, they can just not do a reset, and then you end up thinking they're going to do one.
If you don't have any friends that play SG, your best bet is, unfortunately, going to be playing online. However, it's not all bad! Repeatedly playing with high-level players will eventually allow you the time necessary to learn what's actually going on. I would advise going through the tutorials so that you can get the very basics of the game out of the way and immediately start focusing on more advanced concepts. Playing against the same person is also good. What's even better is if they play fair. Some characters, like Big Band, have moves that are relatively easy to counter, but if you aren't prepared, you can take huge amounts of damage very quickly. For example, if you attacked Big Band and you're doing a combo on him, he has a DP which is invincible, incredibly fast, and allows him to go into a full combo. Some band players will be spamming this constantly because they suck and are just hoping you'll mess up your combo eventually. A lot of characters can be played like this, so be wary, because some people will just try to cheap you out and assume you'll drop combos. The way to beat these players is with burst baits, but as a newbie, it might be a little tough to memorize burst baits and incorporate them into your playstyle.
So, my suggestions are:
I'm gonna try some online matches and see how I do
