New Player; Getting ROFLstomped Online. Salty. Tips and tricks please.
Hello everyone,

I'm new to 2d fighters but I have played Tekken 7 even though I'm a 3rd dan scrub and a bit of Brawlhalla. I'm getting my ass handed to me even though I finished the tutorial. Halp.

Right now I'm trying to play Parasoul because she's the graceful duelist lady with extra pomf in Skullgirls. And also slow and deliberate semi-zoner is a playstyle that appeals to me. Also she's napalm hot ngl.

I'm having problems understanding the combo system, coming from Tekken 7 and Brawlhalla where there already are predetermined combos. The Parasoul guide I watched didn't touch on it either. It only says something along the lines of ,chain into this move' or ,start a combo with this'. I heard Parasoul was combo heavy so this is a problem.

Aside from this, I'm wondering about what to work on as a new player.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm also a beginner, not so good at fighting games. I found Dustloop had very useful info. And this guide may give you help (I'm learning on it too):

Hope it helps. And let's improve together! :2017stickycrab:

Yesterday i got jugled by Squigly to the death, couldn't do anything 10/10 would fight again.
Use Ms Fortune? She probably has the lowest skill floor among all characters.

But really, the online play in this game is very unforgiving, even for returning players like myself.

Learn 1 or 2 combos and maybe a reset, then go online and get into the mindset of counting it as your win even if you lose as long as you are able to land those combos or reset in a match. Neutral game will come to you naturally if you are trying your best to get in to practice what you learn. I think the easiest character to pick up and learn is double. You really only need to learn the barrel loop and its quirks against big band to play her. Then you can learn the cilia slide combo route after when you are bored of doing barrel loops. Her neutral game is just shooting her gun, confirming off her anti-air heavy gun, or cilia slide. I mean even if you mess up a barrel loop avery falling down gives you some breathing room.
Funny you say that, because I rarely find anyone who can complete barrel loop combo consistently.

LOL Agreed, I can't barrel loop consistently on painwheel or big band either... That's why I do the cilia route on them... Sometimes they just get launched too high or get hit by avery funny...

Hey this is what happened to me on my first match but against Parasoul lol. So there's a tutorial specifically for this in chapter 5 it's called IPS or something. Basically you can get out of combos if they go on for too long. I hope it helps brotha.

Thanks! I've read it and it's very useful for the training mode settings alone. I like the guide; it's well written.

Ouch. The 2dfighter life really do be like that.

I love how Ms. Fortune can take off her head and throw it, but rushdown is just not my style. Thanks for the suggestion tho!

I can be proud to say I accomplished doing combos reliably online and even won the match. The dude curbstomped me for 9 matches straight before I got a win but still... it count for something, right?

Thanks for directing me to learn combos and resets. It helped me start out.

As for the characters... Double is nightmare fuel and I don't want to get anywhere near that character. She seems like a nice person though from the story mode. And is Cilia supposed to be Filia or is that another character? The only one I know who shoots a gun is Peacock.

Also, aren't resets part of combos? Resets are things like airdash cancelling and special cancelling that extends a combo, right?

Hell yeah set small goals and celebrate those little victories whatever they are, even the littlest dopamine hit is a powerful motivator. Goals don't even have to be winning matches yet, landing your combo on a moving target is good progress too!

Don't sweat too much about picking the right 'beginner character'. I always tell people that fighting games are hard no matter who you pick or what game you play so pick something you're motivated to stick with even when you run into trouble. If you play something you're not really interested in just because someone else told you to, you're probably going to end up giving up on it.

Cilia Slide[wiki.gbl.gg] is one of Double's specials, as is Luger. Resets are when you drop your combo early to go for a surprise mixup that leads into a new combo. Liam has an excellent video explaining it.

Yeah it was superior squigly lol. At least Big Band was nice and played death march for me lol.

Thanks for the explanation on resets and cilia slide. That makes sense. So cilia slide refers to Double's cilias then. I don't want to imagine that.

I can't agree more with the 2nd tbh. I love playing card games and when a new player comes in they sometimes end up too fixated on meta and ease of play that they end up with a deck they don't enjoy playing. Then they make another one or quit entirely.

Also I'm finding a lot of your posts on reddit recently, Missingno. They are extremely useful. I'm grateful brotha!

Squigly's rough for sure to play against as a newbie. Seriously playing against her is like playing against Eddie in low ELO Tekken.

And I love how Big Band can play music during his 5 meter. One of my favorite things in the game.
