I like the Realistic Oxygen Consumption Rate mod, and the tweak to the oxygen bottle mods, so that it fits thru small conveyor ports in my small ships. (or fits in a small cargo container)...
Better Drills and Better Ore Detectors are nice just so I don't have to ram the nose of my ship into the side of the asteroid.
Well have fun, see what you like and don't like.
The Cataclysm hazards is what makes it so Hardcore. Its like trying to survive alone on a space platform while being shelled by artillery the whole time.
I have yet to survive more than 10 min. but am working on it. am interesting in seeing what a Hard Core survival story in those conditions would be.
I'd also suggest using the least-dense universe settings, making it harder to find resources, and avoiding the Asteroids map, as its central asteroid has the 5 smaller asteroids that contain the resources you would need. Lone Survivor starts you out with a basic base, but that single asteroid only holds so many resources, and its open and exposed to the meteorites which means defend or die.
Alternatively, load up the game in creative mode first and get rid of the smaller asteroids. Just be careful not to control-X the asteroids if they are in the same ...err, box.. as the large asteroid. It might be a bit of a pain in the ass to use the voxel tools to delete the asteroids, but if the smaller asteroids are in the same box as the large asteroid then you will delete everything inside the box (gonna fire up a creative game to double check what I'm saying here)
Several mods could be used as well to make survival way harder, the Projector Disabler /might/ make things a bit harder, as you couldnt use a blueprint for an easy-peesy ship designer. Also, a hydroponics mod instead of using o2 farms/generators -though I should point out the current hydroponics mods I've seen don't require anything other than energy
Another mod, Minimal Space Lifeboat, could be used. It starts you out in pretty bad shape, but not impossible to succeed with this one, just takes some effort, but I'd assume thats what you are looking for Mr Extreme Survivalist ;)
I've been using an AI Mod to make things a bit more interesting personally....
You have my respect, Sir. I have never turned the Meteors above the second setting
