That said, I've read (I play without them) that the meteors always come from the star in the system. So, the easiest way to avoid the showers would be to build on the dark side of the large asteroids. You'd stay safe forever, but you'd not have the ability to use solar panels.
it be a bit hard..
If you build you station behind small asteroids make sure some of the base is exposed. all you need to do is use smaller asteroids (the ones that seem to be in orbit of the larger) as a kind of shield that will take most of the barrage. Those that slip by will either miss or do very little damage. At least nothing that will take too long to fix.
This way you can still use the sun but also have a first line of defense against them.
You will never escape them fully without building behind a large asteroid.
Oh, and this also depends on which setting you have asteroids on. They seem to get larger the higher the difficulty, and therefore do more damage.
it took me like 8 hours.. i had to build a mining ship first to get lots of uranium and iron. then i made a becon, stole a business ship, dissembled my main base
but my new base is cool because i got to choose the color scheme as i built it
oh, and glass blocks solar on the initial release :-(
I just made a long line of light armor blocks around the astroid, took an hour, then put a solar panel facing the sun.. it works. and the meteors have been missing it so far.
it's kinda funny, looks like a tennis racket in space. here is a link to my current build.

i've even thought about using giant pistons to move a section into the light and back when i see meteor strikes
is a pain park big ship but is safe
