Lone survivor still playable?
Hi It's been years since I first played the lone survivor and never came back to it. Now I have and I cannot shake the feeling that something is wrong. I have scanned 50+ asteroids with large ore detector but all I keep finding is Fe, Ag, Ice. No Ni, Co, Pt, Au, Mg, Si or U. I went to 50+km from base spawn and still nothing. Is it a bug? Or am I missing something?

Maybe bad luck? I recently started playing the game first time, and went with Lone Survivor (so i start with minimum and can build myself up and learn the game).
I explored a bunch of asteroids as far as 25km away from station via jetpack travel.
I found a bunch of Fe and Ice, and after a while i did also find Ni, Ag, and later I also finally discovered some Co on Asteroids (which was the resource i was searching for).
I then discovered/realized sometime after finding Ni, that i can make Fe Ni Si Gravel via refining Stone too.

One thing to remember about ore detectors is that their range is SHORT (Yes, even the large-grid one) and asteroids are freaking HUGE.
To get reliable scans, you need to have that detector right up against the rock and skim the surface. It's pretty rare to find rocks that don't have anything at all.

As to your Nickel and Silicon shortages, process that stone you pick up when mining the regular ores. With enough stone processed, you should rarely run short of iron or silicon. Every now and then, I go out and supplement my nickel stocks with the actual ore. Yes, that's a LOT of damn stone that I've run through. No, I don't recommend trying to haul massive loads of stone long distances.

I feel your pain. I used to play the crap out of this game, but over the years it has become Planet Engineers more than Space Engineers. (Yellow life-boat starter, I miss you so!)

I'm slowly trying to get to terms with the new way things are (Uranium seems to have gone from rare to super-duper-extreme-ultra-hyper-rare, use Hydrogen instead, and iron seems to be just as rare, I just can't find any).

Seems like the devs lost focus on what made this game good, and focussed on Creative-mode mega-space-PvP-battles and (multi-player) economy. And to make those work, they reworked the resource-algorithms in space, meaning those of us that really enjoyed the Survival-mode "not interested in PvP, I just want to build a base in space but not in Creative Mode" are f-ed...

Hang in there, the game is still playable, but you'll probably have to scrap your old ways of doing things.

It's still possible to configure the save to use the older asteroid classes. It's not available through the menus any longer, you need to edit the parameter <VoxelGeneratorVersion> in the save files.

I had not played much recently so I was just doing some tests and it appears Keen have now stopped this from working on the client. If a save has the older version set, it is changed to the current V4 on loading. Earlier versions are still working on dedicated server. Just more Keen BS I'm afraid. Is is a bug? Is it deliberate? What other features/functions will be silently removed on future updates? This is sadly the way the game development has progressed (?) for a long time now and is why I rarely play any longer. Clearly there is little point in my continuing to post to the discussions here as so much of my acquired knowledge has been rendered obsolete. Good luck :)
