Building first space station...
Me and my friends have recently got into the game and are having a blast. We recently made our first space faring ship and journied to the Earth's moon.

Our next plan is to build a space station, however we are unsure how to go about doing it since there would be no "ground" to go about doing it. I recently came up with an idea to build a large ship with a detachable build floor, equipped with a grav generator to setup the station and was wondering if that would be a way to do it.

Another thought I had would be to build a ship that could be converted into a station, but I like my first idea better because it sounds cooler.

Please let me know your thoughts on my ideas and please share your own! Thanks!

Any adea you have you should try out. But a space station is pretty much a huge ship. You will still need thrusters on it in case someone bumps it so it can retain station where it is. But having a staging point to drop off resources is not a bad place to start.

I personally like going for space stations on asteroids. But for building in empty space, you can technically just start putting blocks down. And after a while it becomes so heavy that you won't be able to move it by just bumping against it in your space suit. You just have to make sure not to bump against it before it gets that heavy, which can happen quite easily. Your plan of building a ship with detachable floor would work as well.

In any case, it's still always good to put thrusters on a free-floating station. Because landing ships on it or connecting ships to it might still move it. Unless your station will be HUUUGEEE, one or two thrusters on every side should do it though.

You could build a ship with just the inner most section of the station. Thrusters, maybe the command deck or a few assemblers, and a bunch of cargo containers for materials, oh and power. Park that where you want the station to be, then start building off of it. It gives you a base to start from, thrusters already in place until you get the station built out some more, and gets most of your materials there. You can disassemble alot of the thrusters used to get off Earth or the Moon and use the materials to expand the main station.

What I'm seeing a lot of is that players mainly just use ships as their stations until they find a asteroid. Since I'm playing on a private server, I'll probably use most, if not all ideas just to see what I like more.

We built a station the realistic way, by building the componets on the planet and launching them into space. With a little merge block magic you can set it up. I also personally like my stations to be considerred ships, with minimum thruster support.
