Game keeps running in background after closing

Sometimes when I shut down the game, it keeps running in the background, using around 1GB of resources. Along with GameOverlayUI.exe, but that just uses about 8MB.
Other times it shuts down correctly.

What could be causing this? And how can I solve it?

Yep, I get that problem sometimes too.

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL for the program manager, then in the Applications tab and Processes tab, look for and terminate anything to do with SE. I usually just terminate the Steam.exe *32 process, which kills Steam.

I've had problems reloading Steam after this but a soft system restart always solves it. On one or two very rare occasions my machine just wouldn't shut down, whereby a hard restart was needed... but I don't think that has anything to do with SE. More likely an issue with AVG antivirus. Seems that tosses up more than a few problems.

As for what causes it... no idea. Alpha game, still some bugs. Plus computers just do weird things sometimes!

That's where I noticed that the game was still running ^^
Also it showed on my profile page, but I noticed that later on.

I only kill the game process itself. That's enough.
Also have AVG but I also don't think it causes SE to keep running.
I can start the game again immediately after I terminated the program, so for the now that method works fine.

Would like the issue to be solved though...

You haven't been getting the error message when trying to shut Steam / your computer down then? "Waiting for SE to finish"
Wouldn't say I get it a lot but it does happen.

Not saying AVG specifically causes SE to persist; just that it causes some weird errors across the board and I wouldn't put anything past it. Without AVG I have no problems whatsoever. With it all kinds of strangeness goes on; not just with Steam / SE but with pretty much everything I run.

Would also like to see a fix but as I say, SE is still well in alpha, so it's it's not likely any time soon. Just adding a voice to your report really.

Nope, didn't get that message. Or I might, but don't know for sure ^_^' Probably SE shut down a short time after.
There actually were several times that I didn't get that message and SE kept running in the background. (on my non-AVG PC :p I only use AVG on my laptop)

I hope not many others experience this issue and fortunately it's easy to work around the situation, but I do hope it reaches the devs and it gets fixed.

Also having this problem, like right now. My game crashed and it says I am playing it, which I am not. And on Taskmanager the game is still running while it is not, I can't run the game again as well.

It pops up in a black box (Steam message, not system). Think there's options to wait or force close but neither makes any difference. Sometimes if you try to shut Windows down while the message is up, the shut down process gets hung up at "shutting down" and all you can do is hard restart.
Could just as easily be a Steam client issue. So many of those it's hard to know what's what most of the time.

Here's to a fix anyhow.

As soon as you manually terminate the game in the taskmanager, you should be able to run the game again. (don't know if you tried this yet, just saying to make sure you know, so you can start the game again without too much of a hassle ^^)

As soon as you manually terminate the game in the taskmanager, you should be able to run the game again. (don't know if you tried this yet, just saying to make sure you know, so you can start the game again without too much of a hassle ^^)

That is the issue, the game doesn't fully close until I restart my PC therefore I can't restart the game.

Yes, sometimes this ^^ if Steam is still running.

Terminate Steam.exe *32 and both it and SE run again fine without a restart... most of the time.
Hence I'm thinking it's a problem with the client rather than the game. I get similar weird issues with other games... or sometimes just with Steam when no game has been at all yet in that session.
