Why do people Cheat and Hack?
Like all survival games, the early stages can seem like a grind and everyone has a super ship they would love to just paste in, but as the saying goes, "all good things come to those who wait". I am however, left with a simple question that I doubt I will get a simple answer to.

Why do some player Cheat and Hack? I would really love for someone who does do it to give an answer as to what they find enjoyable as I would imagine that it makes the game quite boring.

Please give examples of what you mean by cheating and hacking. I'm sure everyone has a different definition when it comes to this game.

For example, some would say that including hostile NPCs in a survival game is a cheat because the ships often contain advanced features such as reactors which can be plundered from the wreckage, often early in the survival game. The same can be said for having spiders and/or wolves because of the loot they carry.

Hacking can be seen as taking over an enemy ship or station for use by the player.

Is this what you mean?

Yeah its a bit ambiguous whether its the hacking of in game blocks to take over ships (which I do for both resource requirements and making new ships from) or actual hacking and other malicious actions.

There has been a recent influx of hackers on the Official Keen servers who have been taking ownership of the NPC stations and changing their beacons to advertise discord channels where they sell tools to give yourself admin rights.
They then use these to teleport to players and delete their grids.

Are the GTA5 servers down or something lol

Ah those kind, well the term 'some people want to watch the world burn' would be apt, there are plenty of people where simply causing misery in and of itself is the end goal.

There are of course others who seek something they can't get from any other action. Take for example twitter bans, a number of people who managed to get other users banned for any slight were asked why they did it and the answer they gave wasn't because it was right or moral or a just but because they got off on it, the idea of destroying anothers life is what they live for.

Same in game, how many hours has a person worked to get this station or ship up? 20 hours or more. Lets wreck it because they know it will upset the player, and that is what they need to get their rivers flowing or to full mast.

If they think the Oppressor MKll is bad, just wait 'till the "Giant flying brick o' death" you're bound to see in any pvp server lol

I think the word for people who take joy in causing others misery is a "Misanthrope" or more commonly refered to as an "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥"
frag2k4 Jun 17, 2021 @ 1:12pm
I wouldn't say misanthrope myself, while they hate people they are more often people who avoid humanity all together living out in the wild, arseholes on the other hand I can get behind (pun intended). But sadist would work since its doesn't just mean those that get off on it.

Of course from what OP said it sounds like these people are hacking people who would cheat like some kind of vigilante group.

The answer to cheating is pretty simple. If people "can" then they "will" if they so choose to.

We could theorize many things that could be going in their minds, if anything. But unless we know them personally, I'm afraid that is all we can do in that regard. As for the issue itself, I would urge putting a burr up Keen's ass. If this is happening to KSH servers, they could probably hijack community servers too.

Thread moved to Off Topic forum.

Note

I keep the General discussion forum for discussions about Space Engineers game only and a discussion about "Why / what they find enjoyable while hacking" is not really on Topic.

I will add :

Players of the Official servers can contact in Direct Message the Official Admins on Keen Discord to report this kind of problems and I can tell I see a lot reporting over there, so don't be shy to report to them.

All can join the SE community, the Discord link in here :
https://steamcommunity.com/app/244850/discussions/0/4622335767039372629/

Once in, go to the "Role-selection" channel, scroll down and select a emote, PC or Xbox to unlock the proper community and proper channels.

PC role + Go to "Help-for-official-server" channel to read and follow the Pins to know how to contact the admin.

Agreed, I was hoping to actually hear from one of these players to try to understand their minds, but alas, they care so little about the game that they do not bother reading the forums.

Thanks Dan, yes there have been lots of issues with them recently and even accounted for the recent outage of the official servers.

So Sad.

I post a lot here and generally a nice person. If I were a completely different personality type, I'd be tempted to cheat to make an invulnerable ship and look for trouble on a server. But with the current state of the game, I might have to hunt around for a long time to find anyone. :)

There was a discussion back on Keen's forum where someone complained saying there was a cheater on a server and naming them, saying their ship turns could not be done with a legitimate ship. The named 'cheater' got into the conversation saying they were not a cheater, but just really good at making ships (linking to their legitimate blueprint for proof), and were surprised at how un-maneuverable other observed ships were.
Dax Jun 22, 2021 @ 12:22am
I have seen similar grumblings. However recently several cheaters were on the official servers and teleporting around deleting grids that Keen were forced to shut the servers down and restore backups.
