It just can't reach out and control.
You can already recieve though. You don't need antennas to detect other antennas. They work just like beacons do, they only additional feature they had was acting as relays so if the antenna picks up something and your in range of the antenna it would also show that item on your display.
There is NO "stealth" mode. That's one of the things people, including myself, have been complaining about as if you want to go in stealth you just don't build beacons or antennas since all they do is give away your position.
On public servers never build active beasons or antennas unless you want to get griefed. On Private servers they are handy for making the location of stations and ships, as well as playing around with the new remote control features.
If you disable that, then your antenna ceases its broadcast, and instead listens for others. Ships in listening mode specifically won't broadcast that beacon-like marker, but they're still able to see other antennas in their range.
On public servers, this makes antennas MORE of a greifing tool, because now you can detect other antennas without being picked up yourself.
On private servers, it doesn't change much.
It's not pointless, because it is a stealth mode.
EDIT: Just realized how right you are, for a ship it is pointless. For a player though, it allows you to fly around without being spotted by other antennas.
