Force Fields ?!
I was wondering about a thing to add, FORCE FIELD, it can be like you place blocks arround the zone you want to be the force field, and just trigger it as a door. It must be a very nice solution in order to make closed hangars and things like that. Moreover Pistons doors are too much buggy when big sized.

The devs have thus far said no shields/forcefields.

Why ? That sound pretty bad, doesn't it ?
Realism.
Because shields only exist in sci-fi as a way to build tension.
Etc, etc.

Oh no, not that again...

GwaiGwai, can you use such a shield to block physical objects?

PS. That "article" doesn't even get the sci-fi facts straight: TIE-fightrers don't use shields. So how do you expect the author to understand how to read scientific papers..?

it's that plasma shield. So fighters launched inside the bubble would burn up. And then the carrier using it would slam into an asteroid because it can't see anything.
Oh ya, I got mixed few things up. This is the blindfolded shield, not the one that could potentially be used against radiation.

Also, because I mixed things up then it also means that there's no scientific paper. This plasma magnet superblasta servo-ejaculator is a physics student project, and there's no actual scientific research behind it (as far as I know).

It's an example, there's other things like that.
I don't see why force fields are less "realistic" than other things in the game.

Because right now there's no practical way of having "force shields".

And if you're referring to gravity generators: http://blog.marekrosa.org/2013/09/artificial-gravity-in-space-engineers.html
Okay, then.
Lets look at them from a balancing perspective:
If forcefields were added, anyone with enough uranium could have a potentially invulnerable ship.
Granted, this could be avoided... but even then, people could just add dozens of them to their ship.

Not only that, when we go one step further it's pretty obvious that shields take away consequences. As long as you're able to maintain your shields you can do anything you want. At the moment certain choices have devastating consequencies because even small enemy ships can cause severe damage to your ship, no matter how big it is.

So yes, you're spot-on when you said that shields are used to create tension (and to explain why the next 40 episodes don't take place at the drydock).

Is it more realistic having hundreds of drills on one ship in order to mine unmovable astearoide that are sometimes smaller than the drilling ship ?
You can build a ship with more and more thrusters (that can act as a force field https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlBFGNfq__Y FOR EXAMPLE)

Well, unrealisitc things, maybe the landing gears, that can just stick with unlimited force to the smallest object ?

...And then you're comparing these necessary oddities (because of gameplay reasons) to something some physics students somewhere hypothesized (and I'm using the word hypothesis here out of good will).

And i'm not asking for force field that are protecting all the ship, i'm asking for shield that are limited by some blocks, with a maximal area etc, you just have to destroy one block to switch off this shield. Things like that.

...You have to destroy a block behind the shield..? Ya... I totally can't see how it's not possible to create a 3-dimensional shape by using said blocks...
GwaiGwai 15 Mar 2015 @ 2:48pm
ok let's make a 2D schematics, "x" are shield zone, "o" are generator blocks for the shield zone.
ooooooo
oxxxxxo
oxxxxxo
ooooooo

So in what way is this unbreakable ?
And just read the first post, it's written "arround", i don't know how to say that in an other way, sorry.
