Because shields only exist in sci-fi as a way to build tension.
Etc, etc.
Look here, it's as realistic as we are abble to make thrusters.
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/6504/20140507/star-wars-force-fields-are-possible-using-powerful-magnets-but-we-cant-see-through-them.htm
GwaiGwai, can you use such a shield to block physical objects?
PS. That "article" doesn't even get the sci-fi facts straight: TIE-fightrers don't use shields. So how do you expect the author to understand how to read scientific papers..?
Also, because I mixed things up then it also means that there's no scientific paper. This plasma magnet superblasta servo-ejaculator is a physics student project, and there's no actual scientific research behind it (as far as I know).
I don't see why force fields are less "realistic" than other things in the game.
And if you're referring to gravity generators: http://blog.marekrosa.org/2013/09/artificial-gravity-in-space-engineers.html
Lets look at them from a balancing perspective:
If forcefields were added, anyone with enough uranium could have a potentially invulnerable ship.
Granted, this could be avoided... but even then, people could just add dozens of them to their ship.
So yes, you're spot-on when you said that shields are used to create tension (and to explain why the next 40 episodes don't take place at the drydock).
You can build a ship with more and more thrusters (that can act as a force field https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlBFGNfq__Y FOR EXAMPLE)
Well, unrealisitc things, maybe the landing gears, that can just stick with unlimited force to the smallest object ?
ooooooo
oxxxxxo
oxxxxxo
ooooooo
So in what way is this unbreakable ?
And just read the first post, it's written "arround", i don't know how to say that in an other way, sorry.
