Auto targeting Block, and Turret Rotor Block!
The one thing better then a huge ship that you've made yourself, is a haevily armed ship you've made yourself! I have been making turrets and weapons systems for use on large ships one such design is the turret of an Iowa Class battleship with a large railgun with a dual 50mm cannon on top of the turret (both mod added) and one rocket launcher either side of the Railgun, unfortunately there is somewhat of an issue of how to control that turret (fire and rotate) without building a cockpit and physically being in it!

I had an idea that I think is simple yet can have a array of applications, the idea of it would be to allow for automatic and manual rotation and firing of custom built turrets, much like the default Gatling and missile turrets have! The second is just a simple (in my opinion) block allowing any turret added by mods to be autotargeting and firing same as default turrets this block would perform a similar function to the Turret Rotor Block but for fixed weapons.

Key Features:

*Allows player built turrets (using blocks) to rotate, target and fire automatically and be used in manual fire mode.

* Placable blocks that can be attached to any player built turret, blast door ect.

This is my own idea though not knowing the first thing about modding in a game like this cannot do on my own, so I am posting this with the hope that either the devs or a modder finds this idea appealing and adds it into the game

I second this idea.

And I have some thoughts from technical perspective on how to make it.

So, auto-targeting block (ATB for short).

- in this block`s menu a player must specify a rotor used to control turret rotation and a rotor that is used for barrel elevation.
- ATB uses both rotor`s limits and speeds (basically - all settings the rotors have).
- ATB requires an antenna to operate (it may be anywhere on the ship).
- ATB has two fields that set at what range they are allowed to start aiming the turret (100-1000, for example) and actually firing them. Weapons still fire within their max range. So, for example, if you set range to aim at 1000 and fire at 500 - your fixed gatling cannon will start aiming at a target at 1000 range and open fire only when target gets to 500. This is made to ensure that turrets will get enough time to adjust their position to meet the enemy target.
- ATB has one slot for a weapon groups. Once they are in specified range - they engage the target.
- ATB can be manually controlled as if it was a basic turret (to be able to do that you`ll need to place it on the outside of the turret or be forced to blind fire).

That`s probably all i wish to add.

Yes, thank you I am not great when it comes to the specifics but this is exactly what i want, and was thinking when i made this thread my only hope is that others who want this too or those who build mods will stumble upon this and it will become a reality, though i just recently found that if you use multiple sensors on the fron, sides and back of the turret and set one function to detect enemies and the other one to fire that the turret will auto rotate in the direction of the nearest enemy, it doesn't auto-fire though, you have to look through the turret camera when firing to see the target :(

Well as solution to your big turret needing a cockpit, it doesn't. You can instead place a remote control block on it with cameras. It will at least make it smaller than adding a cockpit generally would.

its not just the fact of cockpits that is the problem, I myself want this system, because my custom built space dreadnought uses several custom made turrets with a mass of around 100 tons, but the problem with my ship, is that i cant control every turret independently at the same time without having a crew of around 20, and sensor operated turrets are to unreliable, and short ranged
