I do search the workshop. And I've found TWO (not a large stack especially when the search for "elevator" gives you over 1100 results in the workshop) mods that come close to what I'm asking for: The works of MMaster and Eikester (respect and thanks to them).
But first of all these mods aren't quite what I'm looking for (one being too short, but wip so maybe... and the other one of a very special design that does not fit everywhere it's needed) and second I think that a function as important as an elevator should be implemented by the game company and not by modders.
Just to clarify what I mean by "elevator":
- Box object (not a contruction made of existing parts)
- Free choice of height and number of exits
Maybe
- Variable surface area
- Closed contruction with windows
The Hanger Door method is not customizable...it has only 2 options, closed and open.
Piston method gives you options. Set up a button panel and each button is set to a different distance via like Programable Block or Timer Block.
Azimuth has a closed elevatar box.
I agree with "fix the pistons" as the solution to better elevators. If pistons worked better, more reliably, you could engineer whatever elevator you wanted. It is Space "Engineers" after all. So ready-built mechanical objects don't fit the them as well as engineer-it-yourself approaches.
This would make an elevator that would go any distance you want ( with pistons so still twitchy ) and any speed ( without you hopping/falling/warping thru it ).
Or even combine it with a gear type block (Mech's Mods: Gears & Things by MechanizedIT) to remove pistons completely.
Duh. Still no elevators. There really should be. Any self-respecting space ship should have turbo lifts and running up and down the diagonal windows does get tiresome...
I'd be perfectly fine with the answer "build your own elevator" provided it'd be possible to do so in a reasonable manner. And do it so that it doesn't explode. The primary advantage, in addition to the actual mechanical lifting, of elevators is that they are compact and save space compared to stair cases.
However, I'm not sure pistons are the right way to do elevators. Keen, give us cables and winches or alternatively powered rails that can move objects. Both would be good for DIY elevators and would be a great addition to the engineering toolbox and could be used to make lots of different kind of things.
Also I had to smile when I saw it "revived", because in the meantime I've started working in an actual elevator company. Life is strange sometimes..:)
a thruster elevator with some connectors can work
I've managed to fit a stairway into a 2x3 block footprint. If an elevator is going to be desirable, it's got to do better than that.
If you could have a rail "head" that follows a set of track blocks you could build elivators as big as you want, open, closed etc etc.
