Don't delete system32, please.
And try running .NET 4 standalone first: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17718

Also, moving this to bug reports.

It took a surprisingly long time even on a beast rig like mine, and I already have all core frameworks because this is also an active development machine. I can imagine on lesser rigs especially with mechanical drives this process taking an age. Quite strange.

Hey guys. Had the same problem let it run for ~15 minutes and it finished and I can play the game now but it's very unstable, crashing a lot, but that's a separate problem.

Just let it run for a bit longer, worked for me.

Solution:
1. Open the commandline screen (Execute > CMD) then write "net stop wuauserv" (Without the quotes)
2. Press the windows button and write %windir% then press ENTER.
3. Rename SoftwareDistribution into SDold.
4. Open the commandline screen (Execute > CMD) then write "net start wuauserv" (Without the quotes again)
5. Install .net framework 4.
6. Start Space Engineers.
7. ???
8. PROFIT !

7 and 8 are obviously optional, even though I love the 8th point. ;)

I can confirm that restarting my computer, then following step 1-6 of Drui's steps worked for me. And don't worry, none of those codes or renaming that file will break anything. Of note is that Windows 8 apparently comes with Framework 4 already installed (at least that's what the online framework 8 installer said), so I could skip step 5 and go straight to booting up the game, this time without waiting forever for it to try to download something.

I believe the %WinDIR% goes into the "Run" box on the start menu.
