1- it's not enough power the problem most of time, the power on cockpit screen goes red color / over load for a few sec. while on autopilot and that can bug the Drone.
2 - Not enough thrusters to stop fast on waypoint can give similar problem, the Drone keeps trying to stop on the waypoint but not enough Backward thrusters so it misses the waypoint and keeps trying to no avail.
-> I sometimes have to delete all waypoints and Redo the setup again.
+
-> Sometimes I have to save/exit/reoload.
What I do :
-> I create 3 waypoint in "L" shape that I call "Approach Vector".
I add one AI Recorder with proper Approach Vector set to return to my station and may add another one to return to my rover so 2 AI Recorder on my ship.
-> add one "Approach Vector" per AI Recorder and enable the one we need for the Drone to return to.
"L" shape Approach Vector with connector on the side of the Drone for example :

Upside down "L" shape when the connector is under the Drone :

+
I usually don't need precision and collision mode when my Drone got the needed thrusters to stop fast in all directions = Perfect landing.
++
I just lower the Max speed of the AI flight IF the Drone is not made to stop fast.
Slower approach = Perfect landing with the right speed.
