Pistons and blast doors
I've started playing recently and immediately wanted to make contractible blast doors with pistons. Of course, it exploded. So i started browsing internet for answers. It looks like noone knows what to do to keep them intact.

My previous notes:
- you can't build any blocks on top of closing blast door, if it is not ending with the curved block, because only the curved block gets blast door back in the standarized grid. If you end blast door with the middle blast door block, it is slighty out of grid, which causes mechanical tension. And could be the reason for explosions.
- it is suspected that you must give to the tops of pistons some free space, because as they were moving it looks like the edges of pistons head sink in to the adjacent blocks. Which can cause mechanical tensions, and, of course, explosion.
- gyros on the blast doors may have no purpose at all.

I've started building blast doors on top of pistons in open air, so nothing gets in the way. Four options:
1) Blast door supported by one piston
2) Blast door supported by two pistons, built without any merging blocks
3) Blast door supproted by two pistons, created with merge blocks
4) Blast door supproted by two pistons, created with merge block, but then had merge blocks removed.

As I noticed, things explode when you load the game with pistons extended. So option 2) immediately exploded. As expected. The rest was standing there just fine.
So I tried to incorporate option 3) into the body made of heavy armor blocks. I left all the space needed at the top of the blast doors and all the space for moving piston heads. And I attached gyros. Saved, exit, load. Door retracted are still standing. So lets extend and save, exit, load.

Notice here that near this body of blast door there were standing my open-space options 1),3) and 4), all on the same station grid (connected with blocks somehow).

Loaded game and then, of course, an explosion. Of course, with huge holes in heavy armour.
But every blast door option exploded. All the pistons I've tried with blast doors standing nearby exploded too, despite working just fine before. I have no idea what the hell happened. Maybe all the blast door options were standing too close of each other, and it was a chain reaction starting with only one option (I'd bet for the blast door embodied with heavy armour blocks to explode first). Or maybe game mechanics are a little bit... Odd, let's say.

For now, I am kinda out of ideas for new tests. Anyone has any tips?

P.S. A tip for delayed explosions on enemy ships - infiltrate it and build a piston with blast doors. It rips waaaay bigger holes than simple warheads...

Are you playing multiplayer, dedicated server or the like?

Clang doesn't like what you're doing, try not using pistons.

Single player, creative mode.
Why not?

Pistons are unstable, they vibrate when you put stuff on them and sometimes just randomly. When you connect blocks to the heads of 2 pistons at the same time, one piston vibrating makes the other piston vibrate and it quickly turns violent. When loading a game, pistons, rotors and wheels move a little, that is probably why pistons sometimes blow up when you load the game. What you're trying to make is possible, however, the pistons aren't always stable enough to use. If you play on the stable branch, switch to dev to see if that helps. I play single player creative on the dev branch and I can stack pistons and put a drill on the end and it's completely stable when drilling and extending.

Do tell. That goes for rotors and wheels too. It explodes. I've given up on playing survival for building, since everything goes boom at some point.
The problem is that the piston head or wheel are considered attached while they are in fact in separate places. My wheels got stuck in the floor somehow. My vehicle flew away.
Loading that game will blow up the vehicle. I mourn my lowrider drill. Every time I load it..

I have managed to build a huge flipdoor using a single rotor in order to enter a hangar with a large ship. Impossible feat weren't it in space.

So the only thing right now is to wait for devs to do something about it? I wanted to use them in survival, but it looks like I have to let that idea go.

I guess you just have to be very careful with your design and save the blueprint before adding things that explode. But yeah.

Guys. After the new update I tried with pistons and blast door again. The no-deleting-merge-blocks option.

It didn't explode.

For now.

How nice, tomorrow is my birthday. Fixing this thing would be actually a very nice birthday present.

And I am talking about creative mode, I have to test it in survival yet.

I always thought one should celebrate one's birthday with a boom..

Ow for f...s sake. Come on.

It's still working. But for something completely different, my turrets took aim at my mining ship, for no apparent reason. Was fun rebuilding it. With power down and only half of thrusters. Inertia is a mean lady.

While in creative mode, owner is set to nobody. Set owner to self, and you *may* be safe. But if there's an enemy on the other side of your ship, well, then it sucks to be you.

It looks like pistons and rotors in survival mode are not exploding now. Hurray!

OP. Your P.S made me spill my coffee. You owe me a large coffee. 2 sugars, 3 creams.

Well, sir, I am afraid that Europeans cannot refund such an atrocity. But if you ever wanted a black espresso with a croissant in the morning, just whisper with your eyes closed "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" and rub some genuinly wooden piece of furniture. A true European breakfast shall appear in front of thou.
