Save Broken....Again
I have almost 6,000 hours of play. Gotta prematurely start a new game. I am tired of my saves breaking cause of updates to the game or to mods. I want the updates don't get me wrong. But...when I saved the game...it was without the update. If a save can't load with the update I would very much like it to load with the old version that it was working perfectly fine in.

The thing I don't get with updates is that you never seem to get the option of keeping the old version along with the new version. Put it in a legacy folder or something. Cause the game be working fine and you be having fun. Then crash. WTF?? All of a sudden nothing loads anymore. The 20 backups you had set don't load. They were working fine. Until some guy somewhere authorized a change of your system data right away. I want the update. I swear. But not yet. Not in this save. This save and all 50 of its backups have no idea WTF that update you just pushed is in the slightest. Its gonna break something.

I wouldn't care if keeping the legacy data along with updates took up 20TB. I got it. The NAS has replaced the DVD and CD bookshelf. Storage is cheap. I would love to get the update as an addition to my game rather than a change to it. If I save the game and it is eventually gonna get bricked on purpose then it makes saving it in the first place redundant. I did the dance. The dance is whatever they make you do to save the thing. I did the dance. That means I wanted it. Thats why we save things. We wanted them.

Saves are sacred. When they get broken....you can't buy another. Its gone....forever. The end user should just click continue save and that be that. Remember memory cards? Physical copies of games? They always worked and still work today right now. The save I started a couple weeks ago don't anymore. WTF is that??? I am saying though...thats the shelf life of a save anymore?? Memory cards kept my saves safe. Every game used it. Now...every game has their own thing they do. This guy saves your game in Documents\My Games and the people over there save in the root folder of the game. Meanwhile others use a literal hidden folder AppData\Roaming or something and I just wonder why they are cloaking your own save from you in a hidden directory?? Thats weird. Whoever started that trend is a freaking weirdo. "Put in in this hidden folder" Why??? Why are my things hidden from me specifically?

I just wish that when I clicked save....well....it freaking saved. The end. You load the game...you freaking play. Thats fun. When you load the game and it crashes because your files changed with an update to the game or a mod and the game decides to apply the new update to your old save.

I paid for the game. I paid for every expansion. I use the provided save mechanism. But my saves are not safe. Saving them does not save them. It just holds the spot for a lil while. Like holding the door for a person at a convenient store. Very brief. If they are too far...You let go of the door. You leave them to fend for themselves. Their on their own. Thats how the saves are now. You gonna take this update right now and like it. We are gonna go ahead and update during the game so that it crashes during game or the next time you try to load so never exiting the game is not a thing you can try to avoid this.

I guess I am just venting a lil. Maybe other players suffer the same things I imagine. I waited all week to play SE. Got off work and continued my game Friday afternoon. Played up till about 9pm. Slept. Woke up at around 5am. Made coffee cause I had a long drive to my mining spot. And by 9am the save is broken. I was having sooo much fun. Not anymore. None of the 20+ backups work. I got grids in there I didn't get to blueprint. Can't even load it to get to them. Starting a new game is not pleasant. You gotta pick Star System or whatever world you play then creative or survival then select all the advanced options in game scripts and all that mess then select the mods and place them in the right load order then start the game and hope it don't crash cause of a mod or load order making you have to set all that up again. Then after the game loads if it didn't crash...you then gotta set up your toolbar the way you like and you may need to set up locations and structures to go with your play through. Starting a game is not a quick process. No presets can be made.

I could just not run mods and not have to deal with this but lets face it....mods nail the things the devs are not focused on right now. I need Text HUD API. I need Build Vision. I need Build n Repair and Drill and Fill cause I like having those nanobot options. I need shield mod that can make the surface of your ship have an energy barrier and another that can make an energy bubble around your ship. I need deuterium and steam because having more power options is awesome. I need small ship mega mod packs because it physically makes no sense that large grid things can't fit on a small grid nor have small grid versions at all and if they do the scale is huge for small grid. Small grid O2 gen is massive in scale. So I have a mod for a smaller one. Modded ore detector cause 50 meters is not a lot. And I run mods to distribute ore farther rarer and deeper. I need more than 50 meters. Really a vast amount of mods would not be needed if every block had every parameter for it exposed to the player to be modified from the K menu if in ALT+F10 creative mode. If I could tell a single welder to have a weld area the size of my ship I would not need Build n Repair. I like having energy weapons options cause sometimes you want weapons on a grid but don't really want to bulk it more with conveyor. You don't have to load it or worry about ammo crafting. I like that. Just provide power. This is my favorite game ever. the modders are a heavy part of what keeps bringing me into SE. I feel like modded or not modded....if you saved it when it was working.....it should never not work. Your save should always load. Your save should have everything needed for it to function even if something updates....everything you need for your save to work is present still and available. I don't need to be able to use old crap in new games I start. Thats asking a lot I think. But your old save working....that was expected. Why? Cause thats literally the whole point of saving something. So that you can load it back up successfully later. If you put money in the bank and then later you can't remove it and its gone. Why? Well the bank had an update. You would be pissed right?? Why Pissed?? Cause they didn't handle the update in a way that makes sure that the money you saved there using the old system works with the new system. Your probably gonna wonder WTF they didn't do that right? Ok let me start a new game. I wonder how long this save will last.

saves break because of mods that use parts of the game that are updated, then things go wrong, it is an hard and frustrating time to fix and understand which mod/game part is bugged, remove the mod and wait a fix from authors.
Mod managment become more tricky and more game-breaking the more mods and more complex mods you have.
EDIT: yes fils/folders position is not understandable! i dont know if it is Steam or the game, but even screenshots, mods you subscribe, scripts from ws, all things are incapsulated hidden away from you, and even if you change screenshot directory in steam option doesnt work for me, they still are hidden in the game root, some user data are in %appdata% and some in root dir, and in Documents where those things should be, there is nothing! lol idk why

btw man, use SEToolbox to load the save and export things, or remove all mods and save/reload should fix, i repeat, the break is beacuse of mods. You need to spot the bugged ones and remove/wait for update from authors.

Hi, that will all stop when the SE Devs will stop changing the game, it will happen at some point anyway and then we will be able to play with Mods wihtout having to update.

It's a normal thing that happens when playing a game that keeps changing.

LOL...Bro I just struggle to keep my game-fu up to date anymore. Your kung-fu has to be strong to be able to play a game anymore. I will not die from this. But the frustration is real.

The last time this happened to me....I was on Triton. On a mountain top just outside of the green O2 zone so you needed a visor on but could gather O2 with a vent. I had a ordinary base with a big garage. Run down looking. But functional. But when you park in the garage and activate the elevator...the garage floor was visually looked like a floor but was a ship controlled by PAM script and took you down 4km below ground to a grand facility. It reminded me of Resident Evil with their secret bases. It was awesome. So much time was taken to make that. So many grids I never blueprinted. Just stop working one day.

Sometimes I feel like the saved game didn't even really error out or get corrupted but more or less refused to load because it wants to protect itself from crashing. And I wish I could tell it "Load Anyway" to confirm. IDK....I know a New game with the exact same mod list in the exact same order works. I am currently in it. But the one prior to this I was playing does not work nor does its 20+ backups. I was driving a rover. Had about 15km to go to get to my Ice mine. But the brand new game just created with the same exact mod list and order loads fine. What changed?? IDK but I guess it was my destiny to start a new game. I would have double the game time I have now if i didn't have to diagnose the game so often. Klangs name is Karen to me. Just sharing that random info

Thanks Dan. I realize this...I was just venting. Cause I wish they didn't change but added. Cause then....Old saves could use the old stuff and new saves could use the updated stuff. I got the room for it all...You know

i know, it's because of Playstation cross-play compatibility that my mods became unstable! xD
I joke, welcome to all PS players :)
EDIT: HAHAHAHAHA
GAME-FU KILLED ME! nice!

And the only reason IO want the old saves to function is because I wasn't done playing them. Thats why I saved. If the save was done in version 3 of the game then and version 4 breaks it....that sucks esspecially if you could continue if the save simply had access to the 3rd version of the game or mod. But I won't die. Just venting a lil. I have been playing since 2015. I have lost countless saves by now and well....it sucks. Cause you pressed save for a reason

I played with A Lot of Mods, had a lots of fun and now I am at finding all the Vanilla solutions, well till the Dev stop working on the game, that should be soon in my opinion because all Game Devs on Steam stop updating their game at some point.

I ain't mad at the Kenn Devs. The do a good job over there with the small team they got. They ain't epic games. And V rage 3 or whatever its called...looks amazing. Keen devs are awesome and the game is my favorite game ever. I just hate how common saves breaking in games has become because I believe saves are sacred. I mean...if saving a thing doesn't truly save the thing...whats the point? I get why things in Win 95 may not run in Win 10. But game saves...if you update....and change things the save relies on....I don't see why there can't be an option for keeping that data required for that save to work. Its already there chilling doing its thing functioning. I got more room for the update too. But I want to finish the old save too. I was having fun
Cthulhu May 13, 2023 @ 9:43am
it is like a meme! A player ask: can you implement X function to the game?
and Merek says: we are not working on this at the moment, there is a mod for that!
Well! the player get the mod and play, save and go bed.
The day after the player load the modded game .... crush, bugs, glitches, corruption!
Merek: OPS!
lol

My saves are sacred for me too, that is why I don't play with Mods anymore, because I know if I add Mods I increase the chances of breaking the save files.

It truly does.....Its a gift and a curse. Cause I mean....they make the game better and take a load off the devs. Skyrim been going strong for what? A decade? GTA too. Modders are awesome. Just wish games had more options for saving data I guess. Like an emulator. In an emulator you can save game state. When you load that its as if you unpaused it. Its awesome. Big file....but awesome. I got the room. Hard drives are cheap anymore and a NAS has replaced my media bookshelf. I was there in a line getting a regular Nintendo brand new the day it came out. I damn near fainted when Mario went 64bit bro let me tell you. This was next level stuff. And now I can build a Resident Evil style base 4km under a mountain on a fictional planet in a ship I built. Despit my woes Dan.....This...Is....AWESOME!!!!! I just hate when my saves stop working cause data it did have before but some guy changed rather than add to it. But again Awesome. I hope I live to do a Full Dive. Let me know in the comments if you know the reference
Cthulhu May 13, 2023 @ 10:07am
this way to play lower versions will not work imo beacuse if a mod is updated becuse the game part that the mod is using is updated and you saved the game whit the mod at a newer version, then when the mod is broken and the game updated you can play older version of the game until the mod is updated too, so you have a older game version and a newer mod version .... xD not sure if i explained it well
Dan2D3D  [developer] May 13, 2023 @ 10:08am
Maybe ask the Mod author to plublish the previous verison of his Mod(s) on the Workshop so you can install the previous game version to recover your creations or to keep playing without having the game update.

Plus I feel like games anymore use the save file for a lot of other crap other than saving the game.

Keen gave us LCD's. I appreciated those. I did. MMaster's Automatic LCDs gave us something to actually use them. He is doing gods work cause he did it for us. Freaking Legend. Nothing cheap about game dev. Gotta work on what you can with what you got. And then you might have to please investors and crap. A lot of games get unofficial patches and all that. Its an awesome time right now cause the communities keeps getting stronger and the kung-fu is getting up there.
