Retractable landing gear
So the magnetic landing gear is a brilliant way to connect one ship to another ship or station, however, whenever I see ships with giants feet sticking out from them, I can;t take them seriously. Is there any plans to develop a retractable landing gear so that it can hide out of sight and not alter a ships appearance?

Or also different length landing gears so that each of the landing gears don't need to be based at the same height in order for the ship to land horizontally?

Thought about this today. I feel later down the line an "extendable/retractable" group of items will/should be added.

I'm looking at an idea where the landing gear is on a motor, allowing it swing down. Most likely this will be far to inconvenient to use though.

not if we get the ability at some point to program pre set movements into motors and activate them from your cockpit with a hotkey

I suppose that would work Flint, but I'm assuming that we still can't activate the landing gear since no signal/power can pass through a motor at the current build.

My take on retractable landing gear

Not bad for a first attempt. The only bad thing is they don't stay retracted when flying, they just flop around if you turn to much with the mouse.

Pretty cool I have to admit but if you start flying that ship around and move on the y axis those gears might flip flop and hit your ship will they not?

Thanks. Yes, that's what i just said ^^ :)

How about this.

Landing gear has two modes as current. Active and inactive.

Active:
The landing gear is extended to full length and will automatically lock onto the next applicable surface that comes into range.

Inactive:

The landing gear folds into its lower half, halving it's height. This allows you to either build them into the structure allowing them to fold up completely out of sight, or in ships where they're directly on the surface, fold into a more compact state.

Assuming iv'e understood you correctly. I like your second idea, Just 1 landing gear block that retracts inside its self? its simple and would probably be good for survival or at least early on when you don't have many resources. It would kill creativity though so i like the first idea better.

I have created 2 versons of retractable landing gear. 1st attempt was a kenetic based system where the landing gear can be locked up or down, but if not locked, the landing gear "extends" when the ship flies up or "retracts" when it flies down. the second is more like a ship in a ship. I created a "bridge" that has the main cockpit in it for the ship and the the landing grear section has its own cockput attached that actually moves down into the bridge when the gear is extended. The main issues are that they are massive and complex builds and due to the mass of the gear assembies i almost always damage something when extending or retracting and it is a pain in the butt to go hunting for the damage and fix it. This whole setup may become obsolete if the Devs implement somthing like above.

Not only retractable landing gear- but also make it so landing gear can dont do damage to deck plates /armor blocks if you are going less than 2ms

Mine is almost perfect now. Minimal damage through flight. They just need to fix the motor issues when logging out and back in.

@ Rooster. Just put another set of landing gears on the forward facing plane of the "leg" that your primary gear is on. Rework the housing. When you retract the landing gear, the gear on the forward facing plane of the "legs" can be locked while in the retracted position.

-Edit- Okay, you read my mind, or a version of my idea, anyway.
