How far have you looked? I spent 30mins drifting to find my Uranium deposit to set up shop next to. Then I had to find the other ores (iron was no problem obviously). The nearest Silicon depost i found was 30,000-35,000m away. Gold was 14,000m away, silver was only 5000m away. Nickle and cobalt were 2500m and 3500m respectively and in opposite directions from my base.
Simply scaning aound the asteroid.. seeing nothing and leaving will not tell you whats inside. There is infact all the ores. The only one Im still trying to track down now is platinum, but I have found all others. Its discouraging to see so much iron I know, but the ores are there you just have to do a little digging.
If you turn off all the systems you arent using, grav gen, refinery, assembler and even the med bay, the 0.6 starting uranium will last 67 days. So you cannot run out before finding some.
Edit: turn off the collector and connector too.
IMO a bit too hard, where it takes more than an hour too find ores needed for detector to help you find ores.
However, I think I have found a pattern that helps look in likely places.
See my post 41 in "Wohoo there be Nickel in them there 1.062 procedural asteroids "
