How rare is silicon exactly ?
Ive been spending 5 hours looking for Silicon, and the only bit ive Found was at the very first asteroid I spawned at - Ive been 50km away from the spawning area, in every direction with no silicon in sight D:

Am I just extremely unlucky, or is silicon just that rare ?

I'd say unlucky, in the server I play on, it's platinum thats hard to find, loads of silicone though, it's all down to the RNG gods sadly

Aw.. I got ♥♥♥♥ loads of Platinum on the other hand.. having a decently hard time finding cobalt as well, though its actually there >_<

Just depends on the world that is generated. I have a survival world where platinum is a bear to find.

yep, all decided by the Random Number Generator Gods....had a world where starter roid had soo much gold, i could have filled fort knox 3 times over with the refined stuff...

Did you check the smaller asteroids that usually float near the bigger ones? They usually have some rare stuff and it's very easy to access.

Yep I did, usually go for those due to finding more rare stuff in those - though they usually got everything else but Silicon. Quite frustrating.

I've had the same problem with ice.
It's all random.
I spend hours travelling between asteroids over a distance of 200km+, only found ice once. Dropped a platform, mined it all. Now i got 600.000 ice =).

Silicone is everywhere in my map. Mined a tiny part of a patch that I found and it totaled in over 1,2 million silicone.

How much would it be if i mined all that rofl ^^.

Gotta suck not being able to find ice though D: - There's Ice EVERYWHERE on my map. I guess it doesn't matter to much if you got those Oxygen farms however.

That's a ♥♥♥♥ ton of silicon >_< - WANT !
Never thought of putting up a drilling station - should probably do that might be lucky that my sensors just aren't picking up any silicon signals I guess :p?

It's probably been done before. But here's what I do.

Build a light large ship, in the middle you build a pre-build platform with everything you normally need + a gravity generator + a mass block + a merge block.

Fly to your destination scanning the skies,
Place a new base block + 1 solar panel + 1 merge block.

Now activate the mass blocks, and grinders on the ship.
And you got an instant base where-ever you decided to deposit it.

Then I just build a drill down and start the drilling madness.

Advantages:
1) you can build at your HQ and not go mad over getting the right components
2) no struggling to keep the ship aligned, just timed mining on a massive scale,
have a beer and enjoy the show.

Here are some videos:

Edit: wait, i didn't even spot that second giant area of sillicone in the background lol ç!

Why would you want a mass block on this ;o ?

The platform is part of the ship.
The grinders cut it loose.
So basically it's a ship without thrusters.
If you hover over the base merge block and cut it loose.
using a mass block, it gets dragged down and snaps onto the merge block.
At that point, the drifting part (drill platform) becomes an actual base and will no longer drift around.

I encountered an asteroid that only appeared to contain ice and iron, only after mining it for some time did I discover there was silicon and silver buried deeper. I do have an insane amount ice left to mine though.
