Face the ship at the sun so the solar panels get the most exposure and it'll sit there forever. The panels provide more then enough power to keep it steady with the thrusters on and the gyro working.
Not needed really but you can also repair the unfinished solar panels and turn everything else on the ship off except thrusters and gyro if it eases your mind.
Oh you can also build an arm of blocks out from your platform and then put a merge block on the ship and one on the arm then join them both together that way. This will add rock solid stabiltiy if you want to modify it and go grinding bits off
That's what I did with the crashed red ship while I tore it apart, after a small ingot spill at the assembler caused the entire thing to dislodge from the asteroid and start spinning into space. Station blocks are imovable, no matter how much force is put on them, so a single block will hold any size ship.
Success! I managed to build a station block and some landing gear, and got them close enough to work...after a few tries, where I had to mine another good chunk of iron pretty fast (turns out, it needed large landing gear) and at one point accidentally caved in a good quarter of my platform before reloading. She's safe and sound...and I think I want to break it down for parts. Nearly out of resources building my own first ship, and I could use those solar panels.
On the other hand...
I could totally make a scrapyard like this! I haven't had the opportunity to play with merge blocks just yet, and the cargo ships can't all be as hard to park as this one. I just need to figure out how to rotate a ship and everything'd be gravy.
Haven't been playing even a week yet, so I'm not quite masochistic enough to play with meteors. That said, is there a direct way to hack things? I used the method of briefly destroying the computer component to take the control over, but I'm nervous about accidentally breaking something necessary. I almost hijacked a shipment before, but broke something I shouldn't have, and the thrusters stopped working (with this one, I just took the extra time to break down the front door).
