How much would you Pay?
Ok so this is a serious thread for discussing how much you would pay for a "little" SE mod.

For the purposes of this thread lets assume that steam fixes all issues or concerns you may have, so if you wouldn't ever buy a mod then please don't bother replying!

So the mod in question is this

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=406341221

This is one I made. I shall describe first the effort involved.

The moon shot is a 7 pane moon mosaic I took myself, each pane had 30 shots I picked the best 1 (by eye) and stitched them together. It required 2 hours a the scope, about as much looking through the images and stitching, then there was the 5 hour travel to the location where I took the pic (£100 in petrol plus time), the rental of the telescope (£25) the purchase of the DSLR (£500) the DSLR to telescope convertor (£15) The laptop used to control the camera (£300) the software on the laptop to control the camera (£30) and the editing software that I stitched it together with (£50)

The Solar Eclipse shot was taken using the same camera and adapter, but on a different scope (£500) with a solar filter - £50 for material, made in 3 hours by my wife so who knows what the labor cost is there! Which if was made wrong, or had been punctured would have lead to me losing my sight!

Further to that there is then the time taken to learn how to mod the LCD panel (probably about 3 hours) with practicing, tests, getting the size right etc, along with a little help from the community to resolve a problem I had.

So how much would you be willing to pay the modder (me) to use this mod? (assuming that most of this is going to me)

Just wondering is all.

I would donate if i really like the mod, but buying ? Not really ! Free mods, that made by gamers not by "greedy" people are better. Because they love what they do ! Look at this game, or look at all the games at NexusMods.com.

Exactly, what some people just don't get is, that even if they "invest" 1000€ (equipment, time etc.) into making their mod, it may still not even be worth a cent (sell price).

Why should anybody even make actual games if you get more money for less effort/skill needed with mods?

Look how much work and content is in a game, even a small indie one, and you buy it for lets say 15€. Why should a mod that adds 0,01% as much in content go for 5% of the price, of which the biggest part goes to the game developer (skyrim right now). This whole system is just to try and get more rediculous microtransaction money while not having to work at all.

BTW I only raise the equipment price because the main "in favor" argument is that it will allow people to be full time modders as a job and that will give us "better content"

And of course if it is a job, a business, you have costs.

From equipment, electricity, software , maybe acting, tax etc etc.

So people need to think, if people are going to do this full time, they are going to need to earn some decent money, and cover their costs, it's a job now, it has to pay it's way.

And that may cost more than you are willing to pay for this "better content"

VERY good mod, but you did this out of choice, you didnt have to do all this also, what about the devs if they get anything out of this, it'l just become another game riddled with microtransactions

I wouldn't give you a dime for a mod that will eventually not work due to rapid updates. People should not have to pay for mods. Don't try to milk the system. Paying for something that should be free is total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
raymazoida 2015년 4월 24일 오전 9시 29분
To clarify.... I'm not and never will be seeking to charge for that mod.

I was merely pointing out what some of the effort required in quite a small mod could be.

And that supporters expecting better mods from full time modders may well be in for a shock when they see how much they need to charge for this (based on the fact that very few will pay them for it)

I'd really like to know for example how long it takes sketan or biomech to make some of their mods. But if they were going full time, they would have many many costs that would need to be covered.
Homer Simpson 2015년 4월 24일 오전 9시 31분
You're just trying to profit off of another dev's work. Nobody is going to pay for your mods. Go get a real job.
raymazoida 2015년 4월 24일 오전 9시 32분
It's kinda like my wifes knitting, a few years back she made me an excellent, and very detailed, very soft, and very warm cashmere scarf.

The wool alone cost £40. Plus many 10+ hours of her time

People have often said she should do it as a job.

But it comes down to the same thing.

People don't want to pay £100 for a scarf! They can't afford it, it's far to expensive, and they'll just go get a cheaper one from a shop.

There are very few people who would pay that, and they have to be wanting a new scarf and know she can make it.

Thus from a business standpoint it is a total no-go.

I would pay nothing. Absolutely nothing. I would rather play vanilla Space Engineers than pay for mods.
mighty 2015년 4월 24일 오전 9시 40분
sry i would pay 0 euro 0 cent, translated it should be around 0 dollar and 0 cent.
there will always be modders who do it for the cummunity instead for money.
paid mods will be ingored by me.

Then apply to the game developer. Actually WORK there ffs.

As a mod i don't know:
-if the author is actually a professional (why should i pay money for a 5minute work only because he needs 2 weeks?)
-if he will update his mod asap forever (look how many mods are not working correctly or are not updated for oxygen etc.
-if he can even fix major problems if they occur (see point first point).

I don't charge for helping people in forums, helping others with PC problems, building PCs for my friends/family, making interface addons for ESO, telling someone the way if i get asked, holding open the door, take the package for someone who is not home, etc. etc.

Charging for mods is exactly the same as charging for all of those things, things i do in my free time or as a hobby. If i want to build PCs/held people with PCs i work in a company that does this and don't expect to do it alone just like a hobby and just charge way more than a company would. That's just rediculous.

I would be more inclined to duplicate paid mod functionality in a free mod and release it than pay for mods.
Flashand 2015년 4월 24일 오전 9시 43분
I apologies for my post, but steam really did ruin the MOD yesterday with the addition of pay per mod. I admit that i would volunteer a few bucks to a really good mod. But that had to be an absolute awesome mod.

Expecting money for some one elses work, cmon guys how much are you paying keen or other software developers for using their product? there is a fine line and i believe that this crossed it in leaps and bounds.

Steam totally and irrivocably destroyed my faith in the modding world. This post goes to prove the reason why.

I guess you missed the multiple times I said I'd never charge.... oh well....

What I am trying to get out is some of the time effort and expense it can take to make a mod.

And demonstrate to those who think that paying is the way to better mods, that the costs and time can be quite high, and therefore the price point of these "better mods" is likely to be prohibative.

I concur. All we need to do to stop people from charging for their mods is not buy them. Once these people understand that mods should be free and they have no right to profit off other people's games then things will go back to the way they used to be.....free mods!!
