I've never had any problems this way.
If you want something like landing gear that actually work without danger then use the maglock ones.
N= normal blocks C = connect L= landing gear
Note: landing gear is used in cooperation with pistons for accurate distance. Advanced models by others in the community also use sensors to detect when within 1m to stop all mechanical parts.

We use a connector for the power and in our case ammo distribution, while useing the landing gear to decrease collisions normally associated with high speed. It also allows the turrets to nicely lower themselves into a locked position. Of course, we do put one setup in each corner for a cement finish.
Maybe its possible to construct the ship in a way that you use connector and landing gears at the same time.
Thats what I do, as you can see here, connector and landing pad but you can do the same with landing gear.
