Don't use landing gear.

I know it sounds crappy, but it's a known bug. Landing gear is risky. One way that I've found to mitigate the risk is to lock your landing gears as far away from your platform as possible, but there's still a risk.

Sorry. =( Good news is Keen is working on the underlying issue, and we should see improvements in the future.

I haven't had any issues with this, so I don't know if it's only a bug you experience or if it has something to do with your computer. Also, I haven't heard about anyone else with this bug.
Then again, Space Engineers is still in development, so I'm very sure it'll get fixed soon.

You could try what I did. I have seen too many landing gears explode, so normally they are the first thing to go once I can lift the ship from my station and control it's flight. Recently I was building a large utility vehicle and I did want to lock it down to my station when it wasn't in use. Landing gears were obviously out of the question, so I decided to employ wheels.

Looks a bit strange, but the use of a grav generator and mass blocks does prevent it from taking off. The wheels can lock it down and they haven't exploded yet on me.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Very thankfull. I was thinking about kinda doing a reverse landing gear type idea. Where i can put the landing gear in the platform- upside down, and have the shop get locked that way. Any feedback on that idea?

A landing gear is an explosion waiting to happen. If you absolutely want to lock a ship into place on your station I would suggest placing a merge block down and using that. If you're looking to land a small ship you'll need to use the rotor head trick that allows you to combine small ship merge blocks and a large ship/station.

If it's just looks that you want. Use the landing gear, but don't lock it. As long as you don't bump into the ship it'll sit there in one place for eternity, as if it's locked.

I wish I could say that Keen is working on the problem, but it's been around since Christmas and so far there's been no patch to fix it.

Note, I have only ever seen this bug in multiplayer. In single player, this seems to not be a problem.

Consider yourself lucky then. I don't play multiplayer at all and have seen this enough times to avoid landing gears entirely at this point.

I get it in single and multiplayer, it usualy happens if i exit and reload or move out of render/load range and then move back, my ships tend to just slowly sink in to the surface then when you try to take off then boom.

I've had this issue since I started playing in October. It's usually an issue when I use Merge Blocks or exit and return to a saved game. I think I'd rather them just make landing gears indestructible 'til it gets fixed 'cause they are freaking awesome to have on ships!

I usually see cliping issues before it explodes. the landing gear sinks into the block, which ultimately causes the explosion once I unlock it. The landing gear moves in and out of the ship periodically so I simply wait for it to be in a non-explosive position, that works for me. I rely on landing gears because I don't like stations. I want to keep most of my stuff to be moveable.

At least the landing gear no longer releases itself anymore. that was a much bigger problem to me, as I learned to live with the explosions

This use'd to happen to me, but it went away on it's own. While I don't have the problem anymore, I'm thinking about just using the Maglock Pads from the Worksop.

Use connectors, they're much more usefull and never break, landing gear is only really usefull when landing on something without connectors or when trying to attach to something flying around to "capture" or retrieve it.

connectors sometimes release attached small ships: mostly happens during the acceleration of a big ship they are docked to. landing gears work better for that (if you manage to deal with the mentioned bug). so i usually have both

Connectors in multiplayer are just as dangerous as landing gears. We had a connector destroy 5 medium cargo holds full of spare parts on a salvage ship that had just docked to unload them. This was on a LAN server with 0 ping.
