Now the engine, that's a funny debate. Its gotten MUCH better over the past 8 years and allows for many more ships/grids to be active. But the engine does break because of clang. You will know very quickly when it happens. As long as your not going out of your way to break it, you should be ok. But than again, clang is a scary beast.

Not if you blueprint your vehicles/buildings. Simply setup a projector and load the desired blueprint over what you want to repair. This will show you the missing or damaged blocks and you can then easily repair/replace them.
It has been improved since the original release. I've had no significant issues that were engine-related.
The main title of the thread if to simplify about my questions about the game being 'worth it'. If you do think the game is worth it, would you mind elaborating on why?
If you are looking for a good vanilla mp server

No rules vanilla server with 1/1/1/1 rates

Honestly, I think you will get bored quickly. Mining, designing, and building is the whole game. I don't think this is what you are looking for.
->> Can you create something cool and find all the working solutions ? <<
That said, I will answer your questions the best I can :
1 - Is it gonna be tedious to get materials?
= Not really, well there are Easy, Medium and Hard areas to survive to and it's there so we can have different gameplay, tho takes time to find all the Rich ore spots of the game you can explore in creative mode to find the best places before going survival.
2 - Is repairing damage gonna also be tedious?
= No, well it becomes easier once you have a welder ship to do the Job, or a Garage/Building station made.
3 - Is the engine that runs this game good? As in does it start getting a stroke if a bit too many things start happening?
= It's good but not if we exaggerate, I mean we can disable the "Block limit" without any problems but yes some absurdly huge creations can lower the world Perfo, and all good if we build normal size ships and stations.
Here is the Perfo in the custom world named "Star System" with a lot of stations and ships on all planets. moons and space :

I'd say that the simplest way to predict whether you'd like Space Engineers is to figure out which aspect of Minecraft you enjoyed the most:
If you like making pistons, redstone, minecart rails, pressure plates, etc., then you'll love Space Engineers which is more sophisticated, more customize-able, and more rewarding for that sort of mentality. The "engineers" part of the title is very accurate.
If on the other hand what you enjoyed most about Minecraft was exploring strange biomes, fighting mobs, trading with villagers, surviving off the land, and so on., then you'd probably enjoy some other game more. I think No Man's Sky has gotten pretty good at that nomadic exploration and survival.
We have 2 games :
1 - Default mode = Better MP perfo but limited where server admins can change that limit, to have a better server Perfo or to be fair in PVP.
2 - Experimental mode = All in + Can add Mods and Scripts + Can disable the Block limit
+ Adds new option "Share inertia tensor" to piston and rotors so we can create more stable Multigrid creations.
EDIT
Enable Experimental from game options.
NMS Space combat is more annoying than fun.
No Man's Sky has a story. It has space ships that you can buy. NMS has non-hostile animals which slightly elevate the "life" of a world. "Brainless" AI doesn't do much for me. NMS looks better at first glance, but there is a fair bit less freedom of sandbox gameplay. I even tried NMS multiplayer and I don't think it is as good as what I've seen on YouTube for Space Engineers.
For a comparison on performance, No Man's Sky runs like a dog on my PC. Very unenjoyable experience. The warp effects are especially unpleasant with the lag and stutter during the loading of "levels".
Space Engineers runs fairly well on my PC. While it is possible to overload a PC in Space Engineers, I have not done so yet.
So for Space Engineers vs No Man's Sky:
Space Engineers:
No Man's Sky
YES, even with no DLC!!! YES, with ALL DLC!!!
PREPARE to put your BRAIN CREATIVITY to the BLENDER and be shredded... after that...
Your no longer a Hunter Gatherer from the old world of minecraft...
"Whole New Ordeal" - A new adventure AWAITS... prepare to stuck up DORITOS and LAYS beside YOU!!!
YES!!! but depends on how how big your project...
- Everytime you expand... the more resource gathering you will make...
YES!!! you better think twice before going to mess with pirates and Modded contents...
- Build your ships wisely that it addresses your PERSONAL NEEDS...
Its one of the very source of fun... so build your creations SMART, and it will help you
smart way... and conquer its grindier gameplay...
Well this part will be a long road for you to see for your self.
THE GAME IS NOT PERFECT...
the game is not fully optimize like the just "Empyrion - Galactic Survival", lots of bugs to fix... still more contents to be added in the future...
The game gives you freedom in the most sophisticated/ well functional Spaceships, Bases, Rover, Spacecrafts than Empyrion - Galactic Survival...
But the Space engineers Lacks a Stand Alone / Reach Vanilla Exploration that you may find nicely done in Empyrion - Galactic Survival...
