Is there no proper tutorial?
Is there no tutorial that walks you through constructing a ship or space station?

I want to get into this but the list of objects and thick manual leaves me directionless.

There are tons of tutorials on just about every subject on YouTube...
I'd suggest that you start here:

Also Learning to Survive scenario gives you quite a bit of fundamentals.

Hi, the Official SE Tutorails can be found in F1 while in a world and we can Pin in-game screen from Shift+Tab.

Tutos in-game F1 :

Pin from Shift+Tab :

But still a lot prefer Splitsie's SE Tutos that you may Pin in-game too.

There is so much you can do in this game you would need a huge manual. Then you would get overwhelmed, decide its too complicated and quit.

Learn the basics of building small structures. Then maybe a fixed drilling platform. Then maybe vehicles / flying machines.

Then you could look at automating things through Event controllers, sensors, timer blocks.

Then maybe start looking at the AI blocks.

Start off small.

Beware of saberoids. They want to consume your soul.

The UI learning curve can be a little steep. There are a lot of things that may not be obvious, so be sure to look at at the key-bindings (and don't change any of them) and pay close attention to any tips that show on mousing over any clickable buttons within the game.

If you want to get a basic feel for both the UI and the game mechanics, the 2 most information-dense videos I know of are below.
Total time is less than 30 minutes, so IMO, very much worth watching.
Ignore that the title mentions getting started on a server. I've never played multiplayer so I ignored these videos for a long time. I finally watched them after a few hundred hours in the game and still learned a fair bit from them! (some very nice time-saving tricks)

All that said, Splitsie's videos (as Capt Fuzzy mentioned) are fantastic. They're just less information-dense than these two. Splitsie goes into more detail on specific topics though, so if there's something specific you want to learn, Splitsie is your guy.
Also, Splitsie is remaking his tutorial videos to modernize them to cover all the updates and improvements in the game since he originally recorded them and his new ones are even better (they're also getting more information dense too, so his latest getting started guides are even better than his original ones).

Which brings up another thing: the game changes over time (most major updates add functionality), so try and watch the most recent tutorials on more complex topics. :steamhappy::cozyspaceengineersc:

The workshop is amazing, but I'd recommend you avoid mods at the start until you're familiar with the game, as some might cause confusion as to what is built-in and what's from the mod. The one exception I'd recommend is "colorful icons", as it's enormously visually helpful and doesn't change any controls or anything like that.

Once you're a bit more familiar with the game and controls, add Air Leak Finder and Build Info (both by the same guy) are incredible. The Air Leak Finder does exactly what it says. You turn it on from a vent and it'll guide you to the leak. Build Info has lots of overlays you can cycle through and lots of info even when overlays are turned off... so you can see how strong a block is, how much mass it has, what sides are sealed against leaks, what sides are attachment points, tons of useful info. For things that generate or consume power, it even tells you how much! No more navigating to the wiki to figure out how much power a thruster uses or how much a battery provides when building your craft. :cozyspaceengineersc:

This video won't work today. When you try to hack the starting ship, it will transform into a station, and the game will never allow you to convert it back to a ship. So you will stuck with you weird base without ability to move. You can rebuild whole ship as new grid, but you need some cobold to unlock all blocks.

Is that some setting they have on official servers?
The only time I've had trouble converting something from a station to a ship was when I parked too close to the voxels. The solution was to grind the voxels away from the cubes that defines the blocks' locations (worked perfectly). It's very repeatable.

Also, that's one point out of hundreds in the videos... the tips I'm talking about that are valuable to new players are the guy's UI explanations. The UI is very cryptic when first played.

I think yes. I think i somwhere heard about this change that keen doesn't allow to respawn pod be converted that easily as game somehow know that this ship is a respawn pod and not the different ship.
