Cant place random blocks and it's pissing me off
So i installed that game yesterday evening. i was building a ship the right way in creative mode, you know with g and create large ship and all. thing is, for some stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass reason it wouldnt let me place random blocks on my ship. so basically i couldnt complete it because it would have holes all over it and i could never finish it.

i've done some reasurch, to no avail. This issue is seriously pissing me off since i basically can't build my ship and ITS THE POINT OF THE DAMN GAME!

help would be appreciated, thanks.

"random blocks" makes me think, unconnected blocks? is that right?
if so, that's true - it starts with the landing gear and everything connects from there.. once you have a block on the gear though you can delete the gear..

sometimes I like to fill my frame as solid blocks then hollow it out as I want.. that way you can get the outside structure nice without trying to think about which spaces you need empty

not really unconnected blocks. just blocks that dont want to place themself for no apparent reason. they're connected to the gear and all. its just that the blocks i aim at becomes red and when i click it dosnt place the block.

yor trying to place a block too nea something that takes up 2 -3 block spaces - landing gear has a large area so u wont be able to place stuff next to it only on top of it and 2 -3 block away from the sides

It is a known bug.. you can fix it by buying LEGO and build for and hour a day on your carpet. It goes away in few weeks of playing.

I think I know what you are talking about. So let me ask if this is it.

1. You have a hull block placed in survival, it looks like a frame of metal bars until you weld it up.
2. You try to put another hull block against an incomplete hull block's frame.
3. When you mouse over it the block you wish to place shows a ghost of that block but it flickers off and does not let you place anything at all.
4. Move your cross hair over a solid part of the frame's model. Try placing it, it should work.

This is the most annoying thing about building in Survival right now. Incomplete blocks are a pain to try and build on since you need to actually put your crosshair over a solid part of the frame before the game realises where you want to place the block. It 'looks through' the gaps and thinks you want to place beyond that block instead of working on the basis that you are looking at what would eventually be the completed face of a fully welded block in the future.

I have made a thread a few weeks ago on the official forum asking the devs to change this. Hopefully they work on it because right now it is kind of silly that it thinks I want to place a block on the other side of the one I am looking at instead of on that side. But I don't think it is a bug as such, just a game design thing that has not been addressed yet.

The only time I haven't been able to connect was when little bits of ore are in the way or the metal is destorted.

OK nvm I read your reply I missed a couple of posts down. You say the box for placement is red?

That means your inventory does not have the item you need to put down the frame for that block. For example, armour (and most other things for that matter) need steel plates as their first ingredient. You need at least one of them to place the frame for a hull block or other stuff that needs steel plate for the first component for construction.

Others like interior wall blocks need an interior plate to put down the frame, since that is their first component for construction.

You can find what they need when you are configuring your toolbar and mouse over the block you want to build. On the left it shows you the required components to build it for small ships (bottom if present) and large ships/stations (top if present). The bottom compoent on that list, whatever it is, is what you need at least 1 of to place the frame for that block or equipment.

Ah thought you were on survival. Then in that case something must be blocking where you want to put the block. Another entity not connected to the ship like a rogue floating block you might have not noticed became disconnected yet has not moved (I had this happen a few times when I deletye a block holding another one to the ship and did not notice, and trying to place anything next to it resulted like this). Or as said above, some ore might have floated there and is blocking you.

Some other stuff need to make contact with the ship on a specific face, like a gravity generator or gyroscope can only be placed against the block you want it to with their base, not the top or sides. The catwalk needs to have contact in a specific way too. You cannot place it where the lip that sticks out of it like a railing is not touching another block either full-on or to the side.

If you are making a station and you are trying to build close to the rock face of an asteroid then yeah I have seen this issue where sometimes it does not let you place a block through the rock but in other places it does and there seems to be no real reason why. So cannot help you there.

Yeah everything needs to be connected. If your not carefull what you delete you may have a floating block there that looks connected but isn't.Then when you try and connect onto that it will be a nogo. I bet thats whats going on (like said)
