How to drag / box select?

I've seen in some videos that it is possible to create a plane of blocks in the same way that you'd use box select... How is this achieved? I've tried Alt+LMB, Shift+LMB, CTRL+LMB all to no avail.

This would really help in creating areas a lot quicker and lining up blocks.

It's CTRL and LMB and CRTL+SHIFT+LMB.
