How do ship welders work?
I'm trying to make a small ship used for creating bigger ships, how does the ship weld system work? Do i need to have the welding materials in my cargo and link it to my welder with a conveyor

yes and you need to use the large conveyors and conveyor tubes to connect the cargo and welders.

You can speed up the welding even more if you set the wieldes on "on" via the cockpit , park the ship where something to weld is and get out of it, so you can weld another section in the meantime but beware of the damage the welders are dealing if you're getting too close.

Btw better to go with at least 2 welders to increase the speed.

ok how come the lines on the conveyors are red?

typically means they are not leading to anything and are a dead end. Make sure they are properly leading to two devices. Sometimes, a tube might just be unfinished, thus the trail ends.
