Intel HD Dedicated Graphics Memory and DVMT
Sup guys, I have the Intel Core i5 processor with integrated HD graphics on a Lenovo T410 laptop. Intel has done something revolutionary by allowing memory to be shared such that it could be dynamically allocated to video memory when needed via Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT). Many gamers experience problems with such a great innovation because this renders many dedicated graphics cards obsolete, and so, many AAA developers now require a check for dedicated graphics memory before the game even starts. This is explicitly and expressly a workaround for this stroke of brilliance by Intel, as memory will not be allocated to dedicated graphics memory until it detects the need to do so.

When I run Space Engineers, I observe that "Graphics Memory In Use" jumps from 62MB to around 84MB (EDIT: I must have read this wrong; see below), whilst the maximum is set at 1696MB and the game is using roughly 20% of total CPU across four cores with hyperthreading, at 800x600 windowed on Normal setting getting 5 or 6 FPS. My BIOS does not feature a DVMT setting, and Maximum Graphics Memory is always set at maximum by default. However, roughly 75% of physical memory (~4GB total) is in use on a fresh Lone Survivor scenario.

Space Engineers does not require a minimum dedicated graphics memory allocation as some AAA games do (as mentioned previously) but it is not utilizing the DVMT to its fullest extent. If I understand my situation correctly, my PC should theoretically be able to allocate enough memory to dedicated graphics memory (512MB) to easily run the game with room to spare.

My question is, am I correct in assuming my PC should be able to allocate enough memory to dedicated graphics memory in order to run the game, and if so, is there presently any way to accomplish this goal? If I am incorrect, will someone please set me straight, and if I am correct but there is presently no way of achieving better performance, will the developers please look into making this happen?

In any case, shout out to the devs for such an awesome game, and I look forward to future development in earnest. I am able to play the game on my stepfather's computer for now, but this obviously creates certain conflicts of resources in the household, and I would very much like to be able to play it on my laptop. No butthurt here, I understand that I may not be able to play on my laptop, at least until further optimization of the game.

EDIT:

After fiddling with the graphics properties a bit, I am now observing the Graphics Memory In Use jumps to about 530MB, which theoretically should be plenty to run at 800x600 windowed on Normal settings, right? In the stats (SHIFT + F11) screen in Space Engineers, I am reading 530MB GC Memory and 1,040MB Process Memory, with 1,351MB Available GPU Memory, ~14ms WaitForUpdate and ~220ms Frame avg time.

its likely not a great innovation.
I should be clear I dont have a lot of experience with SPECIFICALLY that EXACT technology but in general I have found all technologies of that kind that I have tried to manage memory by moving it around or 'sharing it' or whatever exact words work the best INSTEAD of just getting more memory have turnned out really bad.

its better (by far) to just get more memory and a desktop
