Sometimes I put projector-blocks on my ships, which when turned on, project a long string of blocks, to emulate a laser beam. It's situationally useful, but NOT a substitute for actual weapon laser dots on the target.
Is this a bug or a feature?
You get laser dots for gatling guns by: go inside the cockpit. Press G. Select from the left menu "Weapons" (or something like that) and drag "Gatling guns" (only a single icon now) to the quickmenu below, to for example slot 1. Then select the slot by pressing 1 and you have laser aiming (currently up to distance of 50m) and shooting with mouse button 1.
This feature is quite essential in fighting against enemy turrets, without shooting up the whole enemy ship in pieces. I, yesterday, ended up sawing the whole enemy ship in two with my gatlings before i managed to destroy the last turret. Wasnt much left to salvage :(
Gatling guns on a small ship dont have a range limit you can set.
More target practice.
If this is a bug or the new intended design, getting used to where the guns fire while in 1st and 3rd person should help
