Yep, trouble with that is that while we can kinda guess at what exoplanet surfaces look like, we really don't know.

Compared to my commute, Mars is far far far away.

Exoplanet detection is not that advanced yet. Also, google the definition of a desert. Sand is not a prerequisite. The largest desert on earth is actually Antarctica.

Keeping this in mind, Pluto and Mars both would be desert worlds.

yup as Vg says we have no confimed desert planets outside of our own solar system, we can only guess what a planets like in other systems, the only way we will know for sure is when we or a probe gets there and visualy confirms.

I'll never fathom why astronomers/scientists aways choose overly boring unispired names for planets.

I guess we're lucky the planets in our system are named after roman gods and not "XPTO-1234" kind of names.

Its mostly a cataloguing system, theres a method behind it and I'll see if le googel can bring me to the reasoning behind the names...

IIRC though, its basically either going to be named after the satellite that discovers the planet, or named after the star with lower case letters for the planet and upper case letters used to determine if its part of like, the primary star or a secondary star in the case of binary star systems

**googel success!

Ok, I can get the need to logically name planets in a catologue-like fashion.
Still, a planet could be named "XPTO-1234" "Prometheus" for exemple, keeping the catologuing logic while not sucking as much.

We have so many ancient god names not being used yet...
Naming 10+ planets like "Kepler-1234" doesn't make anything easier either.

They end up just looking like some sort of password for picky sites that forces people to use lowercase, uppercase, letters, numbers and symbols in the same password.
Exemple from the list: "HAT-P-27-WASP-40 b" <- WTF is that supposed to accomplish?

Hey, don't be talking smack about HAT-P-27-WASP-40-b, my homies live there! ;D

....ANYWAYS...

I'd say one, but everyone here would hate me for it. I hate myself right now because its stuck in my head for eternity due to part of my name costantly reminding me of it.

That's pretty cool. Does it really works?

I havent gotten that far, I just remembered there was a site that was letting people make suggestions that would get voted on.

I might just submit something now though... "Awesomeworld"

I think it will do well in the voting xD

**** I should have read the site farther, they're in voting stage now for only 20 systems with names suggested by certain groups
