With a simple conveyor sorter -> connector setup though, you can make your ship automatically eject all that useless stone while you mine.
What´s problem with it?
A quick search of these forums or youtube will show you over a dozen references to people saying "hey did you know if you are in a mining ship and you left click you collect ore but if you right click it digs a hole faster but no ore"... or something to that effect. And yet left or right clicking doesn't seem to do anything at all when Im in a ship
Though I can say, I saw in the Direwolf20 LP series, he put the drills for his ship on the last item slot (9?). And was able to get the same functionality as hand drill. Left click to mine, right click to clear larger areas. I remember him saying he put the drills on that slot so it would work that way. But I've never tried it.
the sorter is a terrible idea. When you are drilling straight down into a planet 80 meters to even get to the ore you want using even two ejectors would take literally hours to dump out all the rock that you would gather trying to reach the ore vein. Not to mention all the trips in and out of the hole you are digging and all the sitting around waiting for the stone to eject slowly over time. You clearly have never tried this but thx for trying.
Thx I'll try that too and I'll post back if I ever figure it out. Here is a video of a guy who posted it 4 days ago who is doing it and his drill is in slot 4 so I doubt its the slot but I'll try it...

fast forward to 27 mins in and see. But he just say "left click/ right click" as if its defaut or something.
Either way, to your other question, you're half-right on the g-menu thing. However, to bind your drills to your mouse, you have to go to the "weapons and tools" tab on the left side of your g-menu and drag the drills from there, instead of the "all blocks" tab it starts you on.
You have put the drill on the ship, gotten in the cockpit, pressed G, weapons and tools, dragged the drill onto your hotbar on a number (i.e. 1), closed the menu, pressed one, THEN right clicked?
In this way I make a welder/grinder ship that I can select which tool gets right/left mouse ability.
Ok so when you go into the "G" menu to set up shortcuts there are Several categories. "All Blocks" "Weapons and Tools" "Animation" "Groups" and "Lights"
I thought that these were just sorting out access to the same exact things. So that if you want to set up a shortcut for turning your lights on and off you can search through the big list of "All Blocks" or you can just go down to the "Lights" category. Or if you had previously made a "group" out of all of your lights in the "k" menu then you could go to the "Groups" category here in the "G" menu to avoid looking through the giant list for them individually.
Now apparently that was wrong. Or at least partially. I thought that "Weapons and Tools" was jut another sorted category to distinguish those blocks from "All Blocks". This is not the case. If you go to weapons and tools yes you only see weapons and tools but they are already grouped. Or at least the drills are I don't have any guns on this ship. Under any other category you can right click an item or group and you have many options as to what you want the shortcut to do. Turn it on or off or toggle or a lot of things depending on what the item is. So to do this in "all blocks" or "groups" with drills you only have the option to turn it on or off. You can not set a preference as to gathering or just drilling like the left click right click on your hand drill.
If you go into the "Weapons and Tools" category however you see your drills there already grouped. You can right click it and you DO NOT get the same list of options for activation that you get in the "All Blocks" or "Groups" categories but you can double left click or left click and drag it to your shortcut menu on the bottom of the screen.
So the solution to the problem is that you have to go to the "G" menu. Go to "Weapons and Tools". Find your drills and double click or left click drag them to your shortcut menu. You can also go to the "Groups" category and add an on/off toggle shortcut but just know that it will only act as a left click to the drills when activated. This can still be handy if you want to drill deep into the planet or asteroid but once past the rock you want to leave the drills on without having to hold the mouse button.
Personally I would like to have the right click option added to the list in the "Groups" menu because I don't want to have to hold the mouse button down but maybe that will come later.
I put the short answer in the opening post for those who don't like to read. The rest is an explanation for those like me who want to know why it is the way it is. It took me 45 seconds to write that and it only takes about 20 to read it. "long wall of text" may be a bit of an exaggeration.
I know.
And when you are holding that button and you will open your inventory and when you have opened that inventory stop holding that button close inventory and it still drills.
Sorry for gramatic (I am kid and i am not from USA or UK.
