Unfortunately it's not. Your suggestion more or less amounts to running the game on your computer in two concurrent sessions.
Both server and client in SE take on the full physics calculation load, and synchronize over the network when able.
At very least, running a dedicated server on a separate core on the same machine is just as good as running it on a separate computer, which is great news for anyone wanting to play with their friends with less lag than trying to just open your single player game up to friends.
