Stargate-style teleportation mod with a vanilla-esq appearance and multi-block structures?
So let me begin by saying I know absolutely nothing about modeling or coding... or making mods in general. I'm sure others have had an idea similar to this but its been bouncing around in my head for years anyway.

I want to look into making a mod similar in function to the stargates from the series of the same name. I know we used to have a mod exactly like that, but I'm not sure if its still around. In any case, there would be a few major differences here.

For one thing, this hypothetical mod would have a more vanilla friendly appearance. For example the gates would not be some ancient technology, but rather visually similar to the design language of jump drives and the other high-tech blocks we already have. I'd still like to keep the ring based design, and maybe even the dialing/address system.

But, and this is a big but... I'd want these hypothetical blocks to be cut into multiple pieces, and assembled to create functioning structures. perhaps with larger variants for things like ground vehicles, large ships and such. all survival friendly obviously and balanced toward late game progression. Maybe through prototech, now that that's a thing.

I'm just... not even sure where to begin? I don't have any of the skills or even a starting point for something so complex.

But to get to the point. Would anyone else like such a mod?

I do recall a Stargate mod a long time ago, though I think it may have been broken somewhere along the line. That said, it might be interesting to have a working one again.

Currently, I use a Star Trek style transporter mod that works well enough. Can't transport grids, though, and it can be pretty power-hungry (1 mw per km, iirc).

I was on a server with a working Stargate mod back in March 2024. I think it was this one.

The blocks being cut into multiple pieces would require a LOT of effort and I don't think is possible.

It's already been done several times. Here is the Stargates mod that I use (I think ShadedMJ has seen this one in either mine or Capt. Fuzzy's multiplayer games):

Correction, if ShadedMJ meant my or Fuzzy's server it was the one I linked above.

Yes I did mean that. I'm not going to edit the previous post though.

Having structures that can be split apart is NOT something Space Engineers is known for and I don't think its possible with the block system as is.

You should also consider other aspects of the game that can influence your decision.

Block ownership was a problem with me in what little I used the Stargate system. Every player had their own faction so if there was any peaceful player interaction, the stargates really couldn't be used because of factions and block ownership. Changing the block to no owner and general use was undesirable because this was my station and I didn't want rogue elements in general. As that server was shutting down I was making a SG1 Cheyenne Mountain thing with every conceivable weapon in the gate room to prevent access even if there was a SG1 iris available.

Can you be more specific on this? Like what the point is for multiple pieces. The "pieces" will mean they are structured in a cubes because they are blocks.

Thank you all for the input! I didn't realize any of those other mods were still working.

To clarify my Multi-block statement... In essence, id want a series of black that all have to be working together in order for this 'Stargate" to work. for example, you'd need:

1. A ring (duh, right?}

2. A control station to 'Dial" an address.

3. A special generator specifically for the gate. Perhaps some sort of wormhole generator or some such.

4. (optionally.) Maybe some kind of stabilizers, that work in conjunction with the ring to keep the wormhole stable. perhaps these and the ring get worn down after each use and need to be maintained.

5. some sort of door/ramp that would allow you to seal the gate. similar to an iris, but with less folding away to impossibly small spaces.

and as for ownership... Id like the system to work through ownership in the "anyone can use' or allies only and such settings, but include an override code of some sort. if an enemy wanted to use my gate, they'd either need to be allied with me, part of my faction, OR need both the gate address and access code.

I have no idea how viable this all is. I've got no clue what happens under the hood for stuff like this... Still, thanks for the input!

Thank you for that! Ill be giving this one a try for sure. love the mechanical claps and such.

If you read the description there's a version of it that excludes the tech blocks being required. I'd personally rather run that one although I didn't when I ran it when ShadedMJ remembers it.

More than a Stargate, I want the elevators from SG Atlantis, where you step in a room and press a button and it swaps the contents of the current room with the destination. Finally get lifts that are Klang-proof.

Search the workshop. There are some that are more like the Atlantis series. This one isn't like the tv series but they're rings and they do what you asked. I do not know if it works:
