Best planetside base locations?
I tried looking for threads but everyone's talking about space bases. What are the best locations to build a base on a planet? Mountains? Valleys? Lakeside? Against a cliff?

Give me your thoughts and why

Depends on the planet. If there are ice lakes; then that's usually the preferred spot. Not only do you have nearly limitless hydrogen power but ice lakes usually contain gold and silver. Any other planet it doesn't really matter.

Best is subjective. I've dug into mountains, splayed out on ice lakes, and put my back against nothing on cliff edges, even went and built a mobile home. I had fun each time as each base were built for different reasons using different designs. What are you shooting to do THIS time, and how would your base support that?

Hi, i can give you the info tho it's a thing we realise when exploring and I can tell it takes A Lot of time to explore all planets and moons in the Star system world.

Some important to know first :

Rich ore spots = Where all ores can be found close to each other, some areas have all ores within 1 Km.

Easy Biome = Where the Ore Detector block is not needed because we can see the ore spots with the naked eye on the soil (sand soil) and no "Bad weather" if you play with Weather and Lightning damage enabled.

Medium Biome = Green grass Biomes because it is harder to see the ore spots on the soil and those have lightning that can damage your creations where you will have to build lightning Rods and Safe Zone (station shield).

Hard Biome = Where there are more lightnings with bad weather and where the ore Detector block is needed.

Moon/Europa/Titan starts = Moons have all ores -1 that is Uranium but can be found faster by exploring asteroids at +/-30Km around any Moons, so the best places to have all ores very early in suvival are the Moons.
-> Creative players start on a Moon to be able to create all they want very early in survival.

That said, one more important Tip with my Favorite areas on Earth planet :

Find Gold next to ice lake and you will find all the other ores around it within 1Km.
= All ores + ice

+ I recommend to read the Weather Guide to know more about the easiest Biomes of all planets.

-> Needed info before enabling lightning damage.

Official Weather Guide here on Steam (Guides link on top of Forum) :

Oh! One more thing!

Trade stations delete all underground ores 5-6Km around them and that is new because it was 8Km before.

So don't waste your time searching for ores around Trade stations.

Note
We must enable the world setting named "Economy" to have 90 Trade stations added to the world.

Oh, that is a treasure trove of information, thank you!

I can't speak for everyone, but I prefer to start on the Earth-like planet, but have started on the others as well, so I'm not opposed to it.
That being said, I prefer to setup shop beside an ice lake, the reason being that I will not only have a limitless supply of ice, but there are usually just about every ore that you will need around those lakes, with the exception of uranium and platinum, which you can only get in space in the vanilla game.
For other planets, I basically try to do similar, find a large supply of ice somewhere and you will usually most, if not all, ores somewhere nearby.

How I build my base depends on the terrain around the ice lake, or source of ice if on another planet. On Earth-like, if the lake is surrounded by cliffs with little level ground around it, then I generally build my base back into one of the cliffs, as close to most of the ores as I can get. This also gives you a good deal of security from attacks if you are playing PvP or something like that.
This also applies to the other planets.
As far as asteroid bases go, I try to find a big one with a hole through it and build my base inside the hole.

Any Ice lake really and in a sunny spot so you can run hydrogen engines for ever and Solar.
