Ship grinders/welders problem

I never played with these, and I can't figure them out. In creative usually they don't work - they touch the block but do not grind it, or weld it when I click.
The welder lights up red sometimes for some reason.
Does that mean it lacks resources ? Then do I need to hook up a container to it ? What's the easiest way to do it - I tried merge blocks but those do not transport resources so do I need to use the connector block then ?

I'd appreciate some help guys

The welders light up red, when they are activated. The welders need materials to work. Connect them to a container and load up the container with steel plates to create light and heavy armour. Hope it helps.

Thanks I thought it might be lack of resources, it's just a bit weird as I can weld stuff by hand in creative without any resources and I was confused when it didn't work.
