Room suggestions
Hi there, I'm currently working on a small base and I need to get some ideas what rooms I can build in (that actually make sense (not neccesary gameplay sense but sense IRL)).
Here are the rooms I already have.
  • 1 Big cargo-bay
  • 1 Reactor-room
  • 1 Small Hangar (I'm not planning to make a bigger one for now)
  • 1 Command room in a tower
  • 2 Docking bays
  • 5 Crew quarters
  • 1 Medical bay
  • 1 Refinery/Assembler-room
  • 1 Auxilary room
EDIT: Had the Auxilary room without knowing it, was just a small side room in my eyes

Do you have a communal mess hall? The crew has to eat somewhere...
A rec room wouldn't be a bad idea, either, to let the crew take a break.
Depending on the type of base, you could easily make jail cells for unruly crewmembers.
Its a small outpost, while it has defensive capabilities its not meant to be military (I think it wouldn't even withstand some pirate raid).

And I like the mess hall idea, any idea how I can make tables or something?
EDIT: Thinking about it I'll wait a few hours to check the new update, maybe I get something to use and I don't really want to build something I can replace shortly after

Hmmm... I tend to think a tad different and I've only ever built 1 real station with it under construction right now - inside a giant hollow asteroid.

Plans are for about 20 or so rooms/buildings through the length of the asteroid, multiple system control rooms - I'll need a few gravity generators for the size of the asteroid and it will be "broken up" - non contiguous configuration vs just a huge building inside a hollow asteroid. A "complex" (kind of my own 'military/industrial' base vs just 1 platform/building layout.

It will probably take me many, many days to build this thing in survival mode but I'm looking forward to it as a project.

As for your facilities:

- You have a command room but I don't know if that is the facility control room. If not...

- Auxillary control:
Spare console/cockpit + spare grav gen (turned off) + spare small reactor (fueled but turned off) - it's tucked away from most other stuff so if something happens, I still have a control center to run things from.

- Special spare "emergency" hidden hangar.
Build your own version of the game's rescue ship - park it hidden in the base/near by. If the fit hits the shan, there is an emergency ship for use available "somewhere".

- Battery of escape pods.
5 crew? 10? Setup emergency escape pods near main work areas, not really a "building" more emergency "rooms".

- Machine shop
Things break and need fixing, others need scrapping. Spare parts, spare equipment & a shreader. Best to have near vehicle/ship docking areas.

- Bulk storage.
A (or more than 1) room with little else than a bunch of various sized cargo crates and the like sitting around (make new ship, add cargo container, delete ship block, take cargo box to storage area and place where you want it - it's one way you can get medium storage boxes "sitting around" in a station)

- Ground/platform wheeled vehicles? Garage.
You have a theme or a purpose for the station? Mining outpost? Research facility? Fuel hub? Thinking that way also helps. For instance, if it's a mining outpost, I'd have an ore processing facility that feeds into the refinery/assembler area. I'd actually separate the refinery from the assembler (ore processing -> refinery room -> assembler/manufacturing).

I'd also separate the command room, putting that deeper in the base (when I see CICs on ships that are on the most exposed tower possible, I just shake my head) and use the tower as more of a traffic control tower. You could have several cockpits in the CIC with just a couple in the tower.

Should also have a rec/crew area separate from bunks. At least in my opinion. :)
Ya, having the C&C center in a tower is only cool if you're in Hollywood, my tower is used to overview the dockingports, apart from that I actually have just a small C&C room but thats more because I use the freighter 'IEC Cyclops' as my C&C center, it is permanently docked to the Vanguard-station.
Ship maintence bay.
A tube of welders you can fly your smaller ships into and repair any damage.

Communications / Radar Tower and control room.

You can use a rotor to make something that looks like a rotating radar dish.
I like this post shareing ideas of bases for those of us that want to build interesting and functional bases to feel like true engeneers. I have been working on base building equipment for weeks personaly. My goal is to hollow out a realy nice asteroid base . But i have tried hard not to do much inside till i get the perfect equipment to drill and shape the rooms to keep tunnels on a plane etc.
With the new Waypoints and such added, I'd say you put down some protection/surveillance satellites so that those pesky pirates won't come into your base to screw it up. Also, you could maybe add an area used for modular expansion; Who knows? Maybe you'll have more that 5-10 people coming to your station to stay. That being the case, If people are coming in with their own ships, Provide landing pads and an underground vehicle storage, Like an Aircraft carrier so that those individual ships can have a place of their own, too. Still not enough? In preparation for the future (it may never happen), But maybe a HAZMAT panic room for those moments where SOMEONE dropped a container of Xenomorph eggs. :steamhappy::steamsalty:
The one thing i have not seen on here yet is a seperate hangar bay or pod bay for evacuation. depending on size and expected crew of the station they should all have the ability to take some form of escape pods or craft. many people are doing gravity driven escape pods now so should be easy to find examples. I also would like to add a hydroponics room which may need mods to be able to grow food and even oxygen for your station. its outer surface could feature oxygen farms. Just some thoughts for ya.
It pains me to say it but the station is lost, I bought a new PC and after moving all and scrapping the old one I realised that the saves seem to be lost with the old PC, I will miss it (the station, not the PC)

Though I have to say that I don't think the station was THAT good to begin with, it expanded really... lets say organic, with every update and new block some room was added somewhere. Not only made that the station ugly but also more importantly very hard to navigate. Or the hangar and docking place addition. They were good on paper but in reality they used much to much space on one hand, but were much to small for good ships on the other hand. (The hangar was that at least, the docking station just was ugly.
i have accidently lost many designs, but the practice of building them does make it easier the next time. also i must say there have been some fine suggestions here so it is not a waste of space or conversation here.
My ideas for additional rooms that make sence IRL, A recreation room, excercise room, lavoratory (Latrine, Head, Bathroom), Auxillery Command center, Theater/Assembly hall, Weapons Lockers, Airlocks, Life Support Room, Oxygen Storage room, and uh... i blanked on one more i had, but there are some ideas.
