ok fanboy :P ... i'm just kidding
So the other mod's as well as some of the other contestants and i privately had a long talk today over steam chat... and I was convinced I should be more evil . confident in everyone's building ability. Since I have been at work all day, w0lf3y kindly tested fuel consumption for me for I (as mentioned earlier) had never done so.
Therefore, ships will be tested in survival. This has been reflected in the op
I do not make this change lightly. The reasoning for testing in survival is
w0lf3y was able to get the two LCC and all the iron ore to orbit using 6 large hydrogen thrusters 6 hydrogen tanks, while only using 59% of total available fuel and not using any ice
I apologize for any inconvenience this causes people who are into there builds. this is the last change i will make to the OP and the requirements for the contest.
Thanks, I can even actually see these today. I guess I already have Blood Gultch, but with the Enhanced Gravity Generators mod, would it effect the ship it's attached to? I guess mostly I need to know how close it is to how they work with planets.
But really, all I have to be able to test is how it responds to 1.0 gravity. If it flys well in that, it'll work anywhere, right?
Yeah, hydrogen thrusters are mega inefficient atm.
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: You'll get the same or better performance anywhere on the earth-like planet (if you also want to be able to land on the alien planet, test with 1.1g instead). I'd turn off any ion engines while testing, since they're very weak inside planetary gravity.
As for fuel consumption, if you floor it all the way up, you'll burn through hydrogen like mad. It's much cheaper if you can regulate your upwards thrust as needed. In survival I like to bind some keys to increase/decrease upwards thrust override, set it to max initially and gradually decrease it when gravity gets weaker (keeping velocity near 100m/s). It's a bit of a chore though.
