yes you can. However, the blocks will be deleted in the game when you load, so make sure they are all either deleted, or in some place that the deletion of a block wont cause a structure to fail.

Solution:

In Space Engineers go to Load World click on your save game and click Edit Settings, the click Mods and then take note of the mods in red in the active mod window on the right side.

1. Download XML Notepad from Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7973
2. Go to C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\SpaceEngineers\Saves
3. There will be a folder here, open it
3. Find the folder with your savegame name and open it
4. Right-click Sandbox.sbc and click on Open With
5. Click on use other app/program and find your XML Notepad (example: C:\Program Files (x86)\XML Notepad 2007 and open XMLNotepad.exe
6. XML Notepad will open and press CTRL+F
7. Enter the mod name that was red in Space Engineers and click Find Next
8. The mod name has been found, you'll need to remove the folder where it's located
9. Start save game and make a small dance, your save game works again!

Worked for me, haven't found any post with this solution.

Go to load world, edit game (settings), send the mod from the list on the right side (disposable mods) to the right side (active mods) or select visite workshop and then actualise, then add them.
Should work fine.

Quick and easy with SEToolbox https://github.com/midspace/SEToolbox

(to replace modded block with vanilla and vice versa in saved game)
