You can still start a new game now, even if the answer turned out to be a "no". In that case simply move your ship as a blueprint from the old game save to a new one.
You can even make that transition as part of your RPG'ish game play: In the old save build a space ship with a jump drive, load its cargo containers with stuff you want to take with you, and blueprint the final result (that will also save the cargo contents). Then make a hyper jump for the show effect. Start a new game with a space start, invoke temporarily admin powers and spawn in your blueprinted ship. Turn off admin powers and continue playing in your ship.
Game universe interpretation: you hyper jumped to a new star system and can now explore it.
+ As usual, some Mods may not be compatible where Modded world will not load while Vanilla will be OK = ??
I thing I am sure of is that better load a copy of our existing Modded saves after a game update to see if it will load OK because some Mods may need to be updated to the new game version.

I still have my first world created in 2013 because I reloaded and saved on every game updates so it can follow.
The worst case where old world will not load at all would be worlds saved between 2013 and 2017 because already too late to load, mean they are already not compatible because we must reload and save after a game update if we want to keep.
That's an idea to load up an explorer ship from one world and spawn it in another. I didn't know you can blueprint ships and they will spawn with all their contents.
If they do make the new PvE content an advanced world setting, I think its likely it would behave like how Economy and Cargo Ships are turned on for existing worlds. To me it seems like a safe bet to assume the new content will work with existing worlds.
+ Would be very kind to make the new Faction available in all existing premade worlds, well at least in the Star System world if it's not a new world they add.
