I have no option to select large or small head.
https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198311152509/screenshot/2519282917740682722/
There is only one option 'Add rotor head' and it is adding small head.
This is what you should see for the advanced rotor. If it is not in the list, maybe your using a mod in which disables this, but not listed in their description(I call dirty mod), or, it is part of the build tree, so you will need to disable progression then. I do not think it is DLC related. It is a advanced rotor cause it can do this..

It seems we are looking at two different advanced rotors.
To do this, you need the large grid advanced rotor per your request, like you wanted, you "have to" use the "advance rotor" to do this task. There are 2 types in the large grid size, one is the plain rotor, and the other is the advanced rotor. The advance rotor lets you use a small head, as well a conveyor function. I have given the info you requested. If your not using a mod, then either you are using the wrong type/size rotor, or maybe it is a progression thing. Save you file, exit the game, go to load game, select your save, go to settings, and scroll down to find the list and un-check progression. By default it is always checked.
Sorry, maybe I did not make myself clear. That was the sentence about what I already did.
My request is about attaching large ore detector to small grid ship.
I attach small rotor (advanced or not) to small grid ship. And then I need large head for small rotor.
Large-grid Rotor and Advanced rotor both have the options for small and large rotor head additions. Warcatt00 stated advanced rotor but its the same for non-advanced rotor.
Small-grid Rotor and Advanced rotor only have the option for small rotor head additions.
What I've done in the past is to have the large-grid ore detector connected to large-grid rotor, note the angle position of the rotor, grind the head off the rotor, temporarily add a battery. put just the rotor head on your small-grid ship, put the small-grid rotor head into the large-grid rotor base aligning to where 0 was before, maybe make this a static grid, SAVE HERE, and on the large-grid attach the rotor. If it works, then they are connected, so share inertia and go from there. If it didn't work the 0's weren't aligned and you have piles of chaos so reload and try again.
Edit: Though it did work for me, I make my small-grid ships fairly small and the large-grid ore detector turned it into a hunchback of notre dame.
-> I can tell I found the "Not working setups" that explode first and found better working solution later.

There are a lot of different setups and here is one working solution found :
1 - Build the large block Ore Detector from a Station rotor :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3104568390
2 - Place the small block Advaced Rotor on the small block ship and remove its rotor head, On Rover for example :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3104566677
3 - The Hard part that need experience : The "Dangerous/tricky" part :
-> Must Lock on the Ore Detector to grab it.
-> Detach from station rotor keeping the large block rotor head on the Ore Detector.
-> Move the pistons to align the large block rotor head into the small block advanced rotor base.
-> Unlock from station landing gear.
-> Go to Adv. Rotor in Control panel of the small block ship to click the attach button.
The solution is to add blocks around the small block Adv rotor that will hold the large block rotor head in place because the planet Gravity will make it fall on the soil once you unlock it from the station landing gear :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3104567861
Must unlock before you click the Attach button on Adv. Rotor because the creation may explode.
The "Tricky" part : "Helper blocks"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3286533531
Remove the "helper blocks" once attached :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3286533746
I use when I build handmade turret parts with projector in survival, I use a Tug ship to Grab the part, align and attach :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196627879
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3196627536
Not easy inside Planet Gravity, I recommend to practice and find the best ship concept able to do the Job.

EDIT
There are no "Add large block head" button on the small block Adv rotor so we must find a good Engineer solution to attach Large Block Rotor Head :
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3286574493
What will be your Engineer solution ?
yes, this is exactly what I have figured out.
Per design, large grid rotor has options for small AND large head, but small grid rotor - only small head. Thanks for confirming.
Thank you Dan for detailed answer. I see it's possible, but per my opinion this is not Engineer solution :) it's about tricks, exploiting game gaps, with save/load, it's dangerous with explosions etc.
True engineering is reliable and sustainable solution with no risks, plug & play.
As I like to say : “There is always a solution – it only needs an Engineer, testing and trying till a solution is found.”
+ There are easier ways and we must find those.
Some players are very Clever and find the best solutions before others,
I am not so clever, I usually find the "not working" setups first and find better working solutions later if I keep testing different setups.
(Don't keep the not working setups you find)
Very clever player !

EDIT
I still prefer my way using Adv Rotor because the rotor head fits and looks better.
You can connect large/small and small/large if you have the space around the rotor. Use a subgrid with a piston and it's a lot easier (if more time consuming and needing more resources).
