[Linux] Copying/Pasting text freezes after a while and stop working.
Hi, first of all, I should mention I'm playing on Linux but I doubt the problem comes from there.

When I load a world, I have no problem, I can copy/paste text without problems but after copying/cutting text several times, the game freezes for about 10 to 20 seconds when I do a Ctrl-C and doesn't copy anything. Same with Ctrl-X, but oddly enough, Ctrl-V doesn't have this problem. Some times, the game completely crashes not long after.

I don't think Steam is the problem since Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V still works without issues in the Steam overlay web browser. I can even copy text from the overlay and paste it in the game without any issues.

Anybody has any idea how to troubleshoot this?
Is there an alternative to copying and pasting text in the game since I can't change the keyboard shortcuts in the options?

Thanks.

SE currently only has official support for Windows based Operating Systems. That being said, Your best bet for support would be Linux forums. It is possible that someone more knowledgeable (in regards to Linux and bridging compatibility between Windows 10 and Linux) may give a better answer, so i suggest you don't give up on the Steam discussions yet.

I am aware of that, that's why I prefixed my post with [Linux]. I'm not expecting an official response. Surely, I'm not the only one in the entire world playing on Linux.

Also, something I forgot to mention is I have absolutely no problem Copying/Pasting grids with the same keyboard shortcuts.

Is this by chance text in a programmable block?
if so, check this:

It's not limited to programmable blocks but any text box, for example, lcds, datapads, etc. But I had those problems they speak of in the link you posted. Somehow, they seem related. I'll try their solution to see if it works and if it's actually related. Thanks.

Hope I'm not necroing but I have noticed a similar or may the same problem.
I can cut/copy/paste ships but if I cut/copy text then I can't cut/copy anything else without closing the game but I can paste text all day long. It appears to not only be limited to the keyboard shortcuts if I use any of the copy to clipboard buttons (laser antenna cords) it just freezes and does not copy.

I haven't found a solution to the laser antenna cords but as for other things you can just manually type it into a notebook/word document/etc. once and then copy from there and paste in game. This probably will not helpful if you are trying to copy a lot like programmable blocks but for renaming it is useful.

Are you on Linux or Windows? If you're on Linux, what distro?

There was a big update yesterday, I'll have to retry it to see if the bug is gone.

Not on their own but one of the SE Dev and the Linux community have created a "Linux" channel on Keen Discord and are helping new members every days so I recommend to join the SE community to have access to the "Linux" channel and be able to ask for help directly to the SE programmer that made this possible.

Maybe, but knowing if the bug also happen in Windows would help rule out Linux as the cause of the bug. For example, the game crashes some times when I play on Linux but the same pattern also happen in Windows, so in this case I can rule out Linux as the cause of the crashings.

Maybe I'll try that, thanks.

@SebSenseGreen

I'm on Ubuntu 18.04

I used to play on Windows so it is either a new problem or just not affecting Windows users.

First and foremost, make sure you have the latest stable kernel installed and graphic drivers (If you have and AMD video card, the drivers are in the kernel). Then, make sure you have the latest version of wine/winetricks/protontricks/proton.
I'm on Manjaro, I had to use the AUR to get the latest wine, it wasn't in the official repo. Then you'll have to get the patch script at https://github.com/Linux74656/SpaceEngineersLinuxPatches and follow the instructions there. You can also do it manually but the script works perfectly well and is much easier.

TL;DR:
  • Make sure everything is up to date
  • Download the script on github
  • Execute the script

After that, if it doesn't work, you'll have to get help from someone else unfortunately.

I absolutely suggest running the game before running the patcher to make sure proton is setup because I had to redownload it because I forgot to do it twice

The patcher doesn't always work the 1st time either I used it 3 times before .dotnet wanted to install

Yes, if you don't start the game first, winetricks/protontricks won't be able to see where the game is because there will be no prefix created. By starting the game, it will create the .../steamapps/compatdata/244850 folder with the default proton prefix.
If it fails, you don't have to redownload the game, just delete the 244850 folder and restart the game so it can recreate and repopulate the folder. All the Microsoft stuff, dlls, drivers, etc, will be redownloaded though but it's not that big of a download.
