How to make free safe zone, shield exploit, bug, etc.
As of Aug 20, 2020 this is confirmed to work.

THIS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO REPRODUCE, BUT IT DOES WORK.

What to build

1: Make two merge blocks connecting eachother
2: build safe zone on top
3: build landing gear on the bottom of safezone
(this is just to keep it from floating away and sometimes to keep the merge blocks from merging)

Set up

4: You will need at least 1, I always use 10 cause Im lazy, zone chips. Place in safe zone
5: Make sure grid is station(static), turn on safe zone and configure the following...
(a) Welding, Grinding, Building Enabled
(b) Landing Gear, and Convert Enabled
(optional) I turn range down to minimum for visual conformations
6: PARTIALLY Grind merge block closest to the "base" grid, NOT safezone grid.
(grind only to the hack line, this should keep safe zone on(usually warm up phase)
7: convert the safe zone to ship
(this will cause the safe zone to turn off usually)
8: Convert back to station, turn on safe zone, weld merge block to functional and repeat step 6 and 7.
9: Turn off safe zone(BLOCK, not bubble, first option on TOP), you will here safe zone turn off then back on, now you can modify any of the safe zone settings below EXCEPT any ON/OFF switches.

ALSO...

That the meat and potatoes. 2 things to keep in mind, Stay in menu when converting to ship, unless you hear the safe zone turn off and stay off(dont leave menu too quickly), even then I always check the safe zone block just in case. If it stays on, goto control tab, and turn it off(the BLOCK only) and leave it off, not the safe zone bubble, you are looking for the sound effect of the safe zone turning off, then back on, how ever you only turn it off and leave it off. It now has the bubble and its "off" you can adjust all settings. the LCD screen on the Safe zone will say OFFLINE, but it will be working.

HOWEVER...

This does not always work. Things I do to make it work.
Spam click convert to station and ship as quickly as I can. Eventually you will not be able to click either button as they will gray out. Do not leave the menu when this happens, goto control panel tab and see if you can turn the safe zone on, if you can, it should now be working however the LCD will not be reading OFFLINE, I usually log off at this point and after a server restart the LCD screen will be reading "offline" but the block is on, I test power and check zone chip quantity, if it looks like its not consuming I leave it alone so I dont unbreak it. If not I repeat all of the above.

SOMETIMES...

When you can not convert the safe zone block anymore and its not broken yet, you can re-merge it to the main base, remember to undock the landing gear AFTER you have both merge blocks in working order, then i usually grind the merge block below the hack line again, and try to repeat the steps above. If you are having trouble converting to a station to be able to turn on safe zone, its likely you broke it the wrong direction, just keep merging the blocks, leaving the menu, or restarting the game(client), also server restarts may help as well. But make sure its not cause your base/ship is moving, Your BASE/SHIP SHOULD NEVER be converted to a ship during this process if your doing it right. It shouldnt interfere with the processes, I just leave it static to help with resetting the safe zone blocks when it doesnt work.

Will this fix itself after every reset on the Keen offical servers?

I have an exploit that I am using to make the safe zone cost 1 watt of power when its on, but it fixes itself after every reset so I have to manually fix it every time, meaning that it is off for at least half of the day if im on for a reset.

no it only stops working if you use jump drive

After this gets patched, Keen should like half the power need of a safe zone because the uranium usage of it is insane, even when its not at max range. It uses about 1.5k uranium a day when using even 85 MW of its 300 MW max and that can really put pressure on you when you are solo. Maybe a way to balance this in Keen's eyes is to make some tiny purposeful vulnerability to safe zones because the power cost is not reasonable for long-term use for trade stations or base protection and I would rather have the vulnerability than have to spend 20 hours a week on upkeep for the safe zone.

I dont think it will get patched out since its difficult to reproduce, most people think its a myth right now. they dont even let me come to there base to show them how its done. I gave up on them and made this post.

A little history on how I found this glitch again, did it the first time on accident. I didnt want to spend 1000 uranium per day holding my stuff together, so I used merge blocks for my ship to base, and set the base safe zone down to about 10m, and that keeps the base safe still, it can not be grinded or damaged. But one day I was messing with my base as I had moved it closer to an asteroid(my base is a ship capible of movement, albeit very slowly) and I had trouble getting it still to turn it back into a station, so I kept mashing the button, moving a tiny bit to slow it down in each axis, and fixing the slight rotation. eventually got it to stick as a station, turned on my safe zone, and logged off. when i logged back on I took my ship out mined and came back, made several trips when i noticed my safe zone bubble was off center, and then after investigating realized my ship could move when bumped. Because Id done this glitch before, i turned off the safe zone block to further test it, and bam. glitch done. I have done this successfully three times now, not a lot, but it is repeatable. I think the server has to be under high load to make this possible.

Good times with the safe zone. Ever since the economy update we've been using the hell out of the clang zones, lol. Sad to see it go but we had our fun.

Last time I tried to get it to work in November 2020, I could not. But there are similar glitches that could be done with it, but couldnt get it to stay up during server restarts.

That isnt to say it doesnt still work, because its always been a fickle glitch, Im betting it is a sync issue between the server and the client during certain load conditions. So in the past I had spent a couple of hours and not got it working then randomly it would work a week later with little effort.
