Some of my ships don't need any Sorter because a lot is already auto by default and I may add Sorter but no more than 2 Sorter with 2 Connectors on the ship IF it is really needed.
A lot is already auto like ice goes to O2/H2 Gen auto, also Drill blocks automatically full all inventories on the ship without any Sorter and I just add Sorters on the Refinery Station to Drain All in my Mining ship.
-> 2 Sorter setup on a ship can be done but only 1 Sorter is needed to eject stone :

1 - Sorter 1 on green connector set to whitelist stone.
2 - Sorter 2 on blue Cargo set to whitelist Uranium.
3 - Green connector set to "Throw out".
=
Eject stone and collect Uranium.
To empty my mining ship so Transfer all to a Station Container
=
1 - Sorter placed on the container port you want your "items" to go in.
2 - Sorter settings = Add the "items" in sorter "Whitelist" with "Drain ALL" on.
= That will empty your connected ship in one second :

Sorters does not have to be placed on the ship, better be placed on the Refinery Station.
Gas Station placed on a separate converyor line without Sorter, so a lot of O2/H2 Generators to drain ice automatically with Hydro tanks to empty the O2/H2 Gens.
+
1 Sorter to empty the connected ship.
+
1 Sorter to empty the Refinery.
=
2 stations in 1 :

EDIT
Sorry corrections made with more details added.
The reason of have so many sorters, its mostly a problem for Small grids. Because capacity of sorters and small collectors are limited on +-64Litres, i have to build more sorters to throw out stone before my drills inventory become full. Very good example is mining gold, when u mine it its not clear gold, its around 1gold = 10 stone so i need a lot ejectors (connectors) to empty my drills so i dont whaste any gold (in terms off efficency). My last mining ship has 24sorters+ejectors on stone and it wasn't enough for 8 front drills 3x3 range from each. Plus i have sorters to in any ore around 16. And here's a problem to setup manualy each of them to whitelist stone, and hopefully blacklist by default i have to setup my sorters in just by stone. (All sorters drain all is on, connectors throw out is on)
I play on x1 cargo multiplier. So have 2 sorters in and out isnt an option. I guess if sorters and collectors have more space available, than i might a lot less sorters. But now have only 1 sorter in and 1 sorter out is to little for me.
I guess its not hard to add to groups of sorters blacklist, whitelist setting.
Thank for replying!
Full load = Collects 55K of ore in about 5 minutes :

The "Drain all" option is not needed on my Mining ships, I only use the Whitelist.
EDIT
The "Drain all" option is need only to empty the blocks that keep their inventory by default, like we must use Drain all to empty a connector or refinery or assembler ...
= I just place a Sorter on the Refinery station and that one will be set to "Drain all" especially to empty the mining ship connector.
= Don't keep the "not working setups" you find but try different till better setup found is the way.
If the sorter is set to whitelist stone, but not drain all, then there is no limitation to capacity
Its an experimental ship to test the limits so its really dumb and will probably cause performance issues, but I think it nice if the concept would work.
Even in a more realistic situation with maybe 10 sorters it would be nice to be able to manage them as a group.
There must be a sweet spot of how many ejectors you can have per sorter? I feel that too few sorters would create a chokepoint in the system?
