Basic Ship flight controls
I just finished my first mining ship using the tutorial by Splitsie (getting started series). I am not getting the flight controls at all. Are they the same as flying in your space suit? Do the thrusters have like a throttle? Do you turn on and off all the motors each time?
Not sure about his explanation of the locking gear?
Has anyone got a basic flying ships for dummies?
Thanks

W, A, S, D, C and SPACE; they are the same controls for the suit. There is no throttle adjustment unless you are using a joystick, assuming the game supports that. The tutorial you watched is probably old. Landing gear can be locked using the "P" key, just ensure that any connectors are not setup for "parking" as well otherwise they will also connect / disconnect using "P".

Thrusters consume energy when at idle so it is a good habit to turn them off. Ensure the ship has a gyroscope.

Hi, it's the same keys for the jetpack + mouse, and the important to keep in mind is to turn OFF its thrusters and gyroscopes to avoid conflicts when locked on to a Mothership.

You may try my Planet scout in creative mode, one is battery powered and one Nuclear using Uranium in Reactor, you will see the minimum needed for a Tiny Atmos ship that you can upgrade to AI Drone or else.

Battery version need Recharging stations here and there, cool one to start with on Earth :

Nuclear veriosn need a bit of Uranium and you will not have to recharge :

I see, thank you both for the replies, one more question, fuel, what powers the thrusters?
During that tutorial he had me remove the ox and hyd plant on the landing pod, so there is not hydrogen or oxigen on the ship, although the battery stayed on board, i did put in a gyro.
Thanks again for taking the time.

Atmos thrusters take power automatically from the Batteries or Reactors placed on the ship and those don't need conveyors to send electircity.

Better start with Atmos thruster + Batteries on Earth planet cause we can recharge the batteries for free with Wind Turbines / Recharging stations.
+
The ship must be connector locked onto the Recharging station to recharge its batteries and having 16 Wind Turbine will recharge faster.

Atmospheric and ion thrusters both use electricity, so batteries, hydrogen engines, solar panels or nuclear reactors can all supply electricity. Hydrogen thrusters obviously require hydrogen.

The default drop pod only has batteries. You will probably need to add more batteries if you want it to fly properly.

Thank you again for taking the time, as Herr mentioned I think the video was out of date, some of the items covered don't seem to work that way anymore and some are not even in the game anymore. He did rant on forever about using the "P" command, never use it!, worst button in the game!, blah blah blah, I did not quite understand why he was so against it?
Also the locking/unlocking of the landing gear was a little foggy to me, If the ship is landed on the ground, and you turn of all the thrusters what is the landing gear locked to?
Thanks All

We could not disable the "P" key on connector, landing gears and wheels before, that was a problem on cars where the P key is used as parking brake that was connecting/diconnecting the connector in same time for example, and the Devs added the option to enable/disable P later so not a problem anymore.

Landing gears can be used not just to park/lock your ship that stops all its thrusters auto or to lock on top of a Mothership and not lose it when flying.
+
Examples ; they can be used to grab Debris with it, transport above a grinding Pit and unlock the landing gears to drop, some use on crane / station moving arm to grab ship parts ...

A lot more can be done with landing gears and just need an Engineer finding solutions with it.

I think I have it all built and running correctly, however, this is what I am not getting. I think its the view or camera controls I am not doing correctly. When in my space suit using the "V" switches the view from close up to farther away, when I am flying the ship and want to dock to my base connector I cant back away from the ship view enough to see the connector on my ship to line it up with my base connector to dock the ship. I must be missing something simple, like some kind of basic take off, basic landing, basic docking, basic un-docking for dummies.

The larger the ships, the worse the 3rd person view is. Just use a camera placed near the connector for docking.

There are more than one solution to find for that, well it's what it is all about to find the working solutions, we have to Engineer a solution for all in this game.

Here 2 examples / Hints :

-> You could create the needed GPS coords to add into the Remote Control block and dock by using the autopilot.

OR
-> Add the needed AI blocks with an "approach vector" / Waypoints created with the AI Recorder and let the AI dock for you.

I will add :

DO Not keep the "not working concepts" you find.

-> Keep testing and trying different setup is the Engineer's way.

Thanks all, the more I ask, the more I learn how much I don't know. I was unaware of any cameras , how we use them, and how to install them. Feeling dumber with each post. Dan knows allot, but sometimes even his answers assume more game knowledge than I seem to have. I think finding current videos that are up to date are a struggle for me, and I think I have gotten off to a bad start, by learning things that don't work very well or even wrong. I still like the game, and I don't mind games that are hard, that's ok, but hard to learn is different.

I may know a lot but I can tell some are way better than me, I can see it just by looking at the Workshop, some are very fast at finding the working solutions before others.

+
It's the part I like the most in this sandbox game, to test try different concepts till I find the working ones.

Hint... Don't use the search within youtube, or the search engine owned by the same corporation, learn to use different search methods and engines effectively with well-chosen search terms, and you'll probably find it much more effective.
