I never had any lags that wouldn't be a direct result of bad ISP.

Played it all, as p2p host, as a p2p client and on a dedicated server.

From my most recent experience, multiplayer lag hasn't got fixed.

Hi, keep in mind "Lag" is caused by a bad internet connection, the character may become slow in-game because of the world Simulation Speed and not because of internet Lag.

That said, I play with my son and best friends since 2014 and I can tell internet Lag is very rare,

-> but we got kicked out a lot and that happens when losing connection to Steam for a few seconds, and usually all good when staying connected to Steam, losing connection is more a thing than "Lag" for me and my friends.

Info +

Things that can lower the world simspeed are :

1 - Mods

2 - Scripts

3 - Complexe creation using a lot of rotors and pistons

4 - Using too much of high PCU value blocks

___________

Good Tip

-> Set all PCs game garphic settings on Default Medium 70 FOV to have a better Perfo in MP.

As mentioned above, 'lag' or latency, is generally caused by a poor internet connection.
This can be the fault of the ISP or something as simple as bad weather, depending on how the internet connection is delivered.
I've ran game servers for several years now, off and on, and generally, I've found that most people that have a consistently 'laggy' experience also tend to have a rather crappy internet connection.
I do realize that not everyone can afford a top-notch internet connection, but as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for".

There are other factors that come into play as well.
While it's not ALWAYS a sub-standard connection, that IS the main reason for lag.
Some game devs do make a concerted effort to make their games functional on even the 'crappiest' of connections, but there's only so much you can do on the coding end of things.

Another factor is mods.
Yes, they are great, and they DO improve gameplay a great deal, but they also tend to affect how the game was originally meant to function by adding code, processes and assets into the game that may not have originally been there. This taxes the game engine in ways that it may not have been designed to function in, therefore, slowing it down and producing a certain degree of lag that can only be fixed by removing the extra code/assets, the mod itself.
So, in the end, it's really a matter of choice, as you can't 'have your cake and eat it too'.
You can't realistically expect ANY game to be completely 'lag-free' if you have a large number of mods AND a crappy internet connection. It just won't happen.
You have to decide what's more important in this case, a relatively 'lagless' experience, or mods that improve the overall gameplay.
In cases like this, you really can't have both...

Hi, our internet is very good. We play many other games coop with no laggs.
Also, we did not use mods. I guess we just have to try again to see if it has changed.

I can share what I did to find the world my PC can support better when set on Friends mode:

1 - Create a new Custom world, asteroid only, the one named "Red crashed ship" set creative mode to test faster.
-> Hit Shift+F11 to see the world stats on screen.

2 - Do the same but use the custom world named "Star System" to compare the world Perfo (Shift+F11).

3 - Redo the same Test like above with all PCs game graphic settings on Default Low, Default Medium and Default High.

Doing that test will give you some Basic Data to compare and find the world the Host PC can support with a better Perfo and no streaming problems.

-> Some PC + internet connection are not able to run the game and stream all data to the connected PC in same time, so the player having the best PC + best internet connection will host the game, and we know by doing the above testing to find the best Perfo.

I will add :

Me and my son end up using the custom world "Red crashed ship" where I pasted a Moon, well smallest planet size available, because that is the MP world my PC can run on Default Medium graphic settings and stream all Data to son's PC in same time.

We don't have a good Perfo if we play Default High and use the Star System world, so lower graphic and less planets is better for me and son playing friends mode.

For context, I have a private test server running on a Xeon farm with a windows VM and 3 dedicated threads. I run torch and about 30 mods. I also have a local PC with 3080ti and 5750AMD processor. On high graphic settings I do get periodic lag and rubberbanding effect. This is a local-only server with 1ms ping and nobody else on. I do not get those effects if I export the same game from the server and run it locally. As such I would say it’s “not yet fixed”.

I indeed have the same issue on my dedicated server, fresh game, no mods, only me and it's constant rubber banding at 5-10 seconds interval. I moved the game local on my pc, no issue everything is smooth.
Dev could you tell me if when starting a new world, let say Earth Crossplatform, do you modify anything or you leave everything default?
Thanks!

You may not know me so I must specify :

-> I am not a SE Dev but forum Moderator community helper/game tester and I help the SE community since 2013 because it's my Favorite Sandbox game on Steam.

-> I collect the most talked about every months to send to the SE team and they gave me the [Dev] Tag so I can be admin of the Workshop to help more.

I collect the most talked about every months to report to them so my Favorite Sandbox game can become better.
